Saw the film, and while I liked the storyline, I wasn't impressed with the animation.
While this was the first Studio Ghibli film I have seen, the animation felt average when compared to say "Ghost In The Shell 2: Innocence".
But other than that, I thought it was good. This film is more like something you'd see on "The History Channel" than "Toonami", so make sure you brush up on your Japanese history before seeing the film.

Are you really going to compare a studio ghibli film to ghost in the shell? lol. Studio Ghibli's animation style conveys the story they are telling. Their stories aren't near as mature and violent as a ghost in the shell story. I don't even know why you would want them to compare.

It is what it is. Compared to other films I have seen, The Wind Rises animation felt average for me. The story was good, but the animation just didn't wow me.
I didn't have a chance to see it yet, but I think you are missing the point that anime is an art as a whole. Each art style conveys the story in a visual manner, or at least it should. If the animation of the wind rises was like ghost in the shell, along with it's non-violent story, it would bomb. The thing that makes an anime film so beautiful is the fact that the good animation studios are able to blend the visual art into the story art to create a product that works together as a whole.
But w/e, glad you liked the story at least haha. It's Hayao Miyazaki last film (or so he says).

Non-violent story? The whole film was about how one man's decision, helped propel a country toward a destiny of conflict and death. The violence wasn't explicit, but it was there in foreshadowing and other overtones. I just think that for serious subject matter like what was conveyed in the film, they should of pushed as much as they could for realism in the artwork. If it was a pure fantasy/fiction film, then I probably would of been fine with the animation.
Otherwise, the storyline is what saved the film for me. However, the six other people in the theatre I was in, had looks on their faces of "Huh?" afterwards.

Got back from the theater. I went into the movie with no knowledge other than it was about planes and was a studio ghibli film. I wasn't disappointed. I thought it moved a little slow, but was interesting enough to hold my attention.
The animation is exactly what I expected for a studio ghibli film. It has the same charm of hand drawn animation that all the other films I've seen have.
The main theme was over played a little bit, but it was varied up enough that it didn't get tiresome.
The main complaint that I have with the movie was the sound effects(as odd as a criticism as it is). Listening to the engines starting up, plane parts hitting the ground, the propellers spinning; it sounded like it was all done with human voices. It wasn't enough to make the movie bad, but I found it a bit distracting.
All in all, it was a damn good movie and it gets a solid recommendation from Fullmetal to go see.

The sound effects were all human voices. As to why they did that, I'm not sure why. Listening to the engines roar to life nearly made me laugh when I first heard them.
