I've always wondered how to record gameplay without lag and such. I never knew about this. Thanks NightHawK!

There's also a few fancy built-in UI's that you can use for editing your demos.
If you type "demoui" or "demoui2" in console, it opens up some windows that you can use to load/edit/save demos.

You can do fancy stuff like modify the camera track, add events which can play sounds or skip to other parts of the demo and whatnot.

Theres an article that explains all this in more detail here: http://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/Demo_Recording_Tools

You open up the console go to controls, click on advance and click dev console whatever. And Hit `

btw by doing this you will make a big file unless you have great video compression software which source doesnt necessisarly like.
i recorded like 2 min in css in a MS codec at 90 quality came out to like a gig something. maybe its change idk
fraps works good enough for 30$, its not like youre loosing an arm and a leg, ohh wait yeah i got that on film nvm lol

I recorded 10 minutes of 720p HD footage and compressed it to about 60mb in Sony Vegas. It renders in perfect HD quality. Just gotta know how to use the codecs :P

Omg Flippy thank you so much! This will help out a TON! I was wondering if there was a way to do some editing before I started recording and if I could skip over the slow parts and what not. Nice find!
