I love making avatars and signatures etc, and when i started playing tf2 i found out about the spray feature. i did some research on it and i taught myself how to make my own spray. And so I decided to make a tutorial on how to do this...

ok, so first off you need to either find a picture online, or make your own. They have already made sprays that you can download here:

http://www.fpsbanana.com/sprays/games/297

If you want to use one of the pre-made sprays, then all you have to do is download the spray, and copy both the VMT file (should be 1 kb), and the VTF file (should be 86 kb) to your logos folder. This should be located in:
My computer / Local Disk / Program Files / Steam / steamapps / (your username) / team fortress 2 / tf / materials / VGUI / logos

When they are copied into that folder, make sure that both the vtf and the vmt file have the exact same name. Then you can select your spray when you run tf2 and go to multiplayer options.

If you want to make your own spray, then follow these steps:

1) Make a picture using either a pre-made picture or just make your own. When you have your picture ready, you must resize it to 256x256. If you don't know how to do this, then you can just download a basic photo editing program such as paint.net. You can download it here:

http://www.getpaint.net/download.html

This is the program I use to make all my pictures, because it is the most simple yet there are many features to it... and most importantly it is free.
Now open your picture file with paint.net, and click on Image / Resize. Then just resize it to 256x256. Here is an screenshot of how it should look like:

2) Once you have your picture that you want to use, and it is 256x256, then you must convert it to a VTF/VMT file. To do this, you must download a program which allows you to convert a picture file (jpg, png, gif, etc) to a VTF/VMT file. I use a simple program called VTFEdit which I found using google. You can download it here:

3) Once you download and install VTFEdit, you must then make 2 empty folders, the name does not matter. For demonstration purposes, I named one folder "Imput" and one "Output" Make sure to put your spray image in one of the folders (the input folder)

4) Now, you must run VTFEdit, and click Tools / Convert Folder.

5) A dialog box will appear, with a place to browse for you input folder and your output folder. Make sure to browse for the folder with your picture in it, for the input. And browse for your other EMPTY folder for your output folder. Once you have done that, type in the name of your picture in the "To VTF" box. Make sure to include the extension (.jpg, etc). Then, click convert.

6) Open your output folder, and there should be 2 files. One is a VMT file (1 kb), and the other is a VTF file (86 kb). Then, just move those 2 files to your logos folder found here:
My computer / Local Disk / Program Files / Steam / steamapps / (your username) / team fortress 2 / tf / materials / VGUI / logos

When they are copied into that folder, make sure that both the vtf and the vmt file have the exact same name. Then you can select your spray when you run tf2 and go to multiplayer options.

This was my first tutorial, feedback is appreciated.
Hope it helped!

also if you have photoshop, you can use [link=http://nemesis.thewavelength.net/files/files/psvtfplugin108.zip]this[/link] plugin to save as .vtf . Just choose the spray option when you go to save as .vtf

yes or u can do that

but this guide was meant for new peeps who dont have photoshop and need it step by step ;D

sorry about that, i was wondering if i should post it in art work or in general, and i decided to post in general because I thought art work section was only for sig/avatar discussion

and thanks froho (THE DEMO PRO) >:O

Funny. This is exactly how I made a few of mine. Nice job with putting it up. I couldn't have done it better :P

sorry i have to bump this but i worked really hard on it, i would really appreciate it if it could be stickied? :D

Thanks for this man, was really helpful. TF2 used to crash when I tried to upload a pic for a spray.

Not to step on your toes mate, I assure you.

But not a day in game passes that someone doesn't ask me how I made my spray. Figured I should just write it down so I'd have a place to point them.

Very well written though. If I'd noticed it was here I'd probably have just had you add in stuff and skipped mine entirely.

oh its ok... i try to bump the thread every once and a while because not too many people comment

can you stick this perhaps? :D

btw your tut is very good as well, just more detailed for ANIMATED sprays ;)
