Yeah, think I'm done now.

If I don't just have one problem after another... seems I have a problem with source games and my new XP install, and it also seems the only way to fix it is to... reformat. Considering I spent about 16 harrowing hours yesterday trying to salvage my PC and reformatted it about 7 times... I'm NOT going to risk doing it again. Until VALVe/MS pin down a solution, I'm going to be out. Might as well put me on the inactive list, because we all know how long that's gonna take them. Forever!

I had a lot of problems with the last install, and it messed up the whole OS pretty bad, actually, so I reformatted. The issue hasn't gone away. I'm using XP with WindowBlinds and IconPackager, which are the only two programs that I've added since my last setup. I'm using the most up to date drivers (including BIOS), and the game still reports the same error with these programs uninstalled and their registries removed. I suppose I can pop into the tech help forum and give the issue specifics there.

"Tuneup WinStyler Theme Service has been found to cause a crash with the Steam client application and WindowBlinds may cause crashes with Source games."
So yea, i wouldn't use WindowBlinds when your Source games work. I used to have it and was unable to run any Source game, once i uninstalled it, TF2 ran.

Oh, dude. Thanks for the tip, I'll ditch it and see what happens.

*edit* - Totally not the problem. Sigh. I'll keep hunting.

I just have to ask notso. Did you ever try running the Steam games before installing WindowBlinds? WindowBlinds does nasty stuff to force Windows to do what it wants since WIndows was not made to run custom UIs. It's possible that even an uninstall wasn't enough to put the system back to the way it was before.

In my experience, WindowBlinds is just not worth the hassle and creates many headaches that cannot be solved. The last time I tried to use it, I could only fix my problems by reinstalling Windows from scratch and not reinstalling anything to do with WindowBlinds.

I know that you are sick of reinstalls, but I think that you will suffocate if you are holding your breath for Microsoft or Valve to fix the problem for you. Microsoft is not liable for damage done to your OS by third party software. Valve is not responsible for providing software that works on with every possible combination of third party software that you may be running.

In addition to WindowBlinds, don't reinstall IconPackager. It is the same as WindowBlinds in terms of messing up your system. For more information, see Half-Life 2 Hate IconPackager and Some help with HL2 via Steam Please.

To summarize, you may have to do yet another reinstall of Windows. Don't install/reinstall/configure/dabble with anything made by Stardock. Everything they make seems to mess with some core aspect of Windows that Microsoft does not intend to be manipulated. And for good reason it seems as other software can easily break due to those changes.

LOL... I didn't realize that there was a second page. I see that you may have gotten it working now. I hope that's the case. Good luck.

Yeah, WINE! Woo for WINE. Also, fresh install of XP. It's downloading now but I see no reason for it to not work now, since I'm not using a third party install package.
