External hard drive for macs

So I'm looking fora portable external hard drive for a mac with at least 1TB of storage. I could use some help/suggestions. I'm looking for one with the best price to performance ratio, I don't have a lot of money to burn.

If Im not mistaken all portable hard drives are just plug and play..
whatever software comes with it for backup purposes..

First question I'd ask: What's the main connection going to be? USB 2.0? USB 3.0? Thunderbolt? That'll be what dictate your purchasing preferences.

Still, which USB connection? There's a difference in performance between 3.0 and 2.0 (one being faster than the other). Why recommend a 1TB HDD with USB 2.0 when you can get a 3.0 version for maybe $20 more? If you want flat out cheap, then USB 2.0 will be the recommended connection, which can be slow and bulky as hell, especially for large files or data being backed up.

At the same time, it's one for his sister, so she may have a preference in what kind of connection (doubtful since it sounds like she doesn't know much about computers, but still...)

This hard drive comes with a Dashboard, iPhone app, is pre-formatted for MAC, and is USB 3.0(which is compatible with USB 2.0.) In my opinion it's a better quality drive than others in it's price range.
However, I would recommend if you have the time or ability to save up more I would probably buy a LaCie drive over anything else.

Again I would only buy this for my sister. If I were purchasing for myself I would probably extend my search past the "ease of use" hard drives.

I personally would buy my sister this Seagate Slim. My sister is dumb as a sack of potatoes when it comes to her Mac Book so in my eyes simple is more stress free for me.
