Has anyone else noticed that it's harder to spot in some games lately?

At first I thought it the characters I was trying to use, but I play a variety most games so that doesn't seem to be it. There will be vehicles and enemies close enough to see clearly that I can't spot - and in sneaky-calm conditions too, not in the heat of close combat.

Also, The Purple Spot. What the hell is that?

Apparently there is some game glitch which can create purple spots (actually squares). I've never seen them.

In my experience spotting can be problematic for brief periods of time. I explain it by saying that it "takes a break" about every 30 seconds, where you won't be able to spot anything that you are not shooting at. It lasts about 10 seconds. (If you notice it doesn't work, and then shoot at what you are trying to spot and tap Q, it works for that. Even a pistol at a tank will turn it back on. Of course, shooting also gives away your position.)

Spotting also can work overtime. Instead of spotting just one guy you suddenly have the ability to spot an entire hillside full of people. This usually only works at distance (about 200 yards) and it doesn't happen very often.

Anyone else have two cents here?

Sometimes when it is being difficult I switch weapons and it will spot. I've had the M95 not spot on a 12x scope, but C4 spot when it could not.

Spotting does sometimes take a break on the game. Im not quite sure if it is distance related or if you can only spot at a certain rate. Like if you click the spot several times in a row then all of a sudden it does not spot for so many seconds. Some have been able to switch weapons and spot again or even firing at a target or vehicle will help to be able to spot again. The purple square glitch i have not seen but looks like an object glitch. I have seen occasional purple dots on my screen but thought it was something glitched, video card, or monitor issues. I see if i can find any information for you.

Spotting does have a distance as well as a 'cool down' limitation.

The fastest a player can spot without overheating the spot engine is one tap every two seconds. Sitting there spamming the spot key ain't gonna help. If you do spam, there is a 5 second cool down applied.

The distance limit is a based more on your soldier's view distance.

This discussion on the topic is mature and a good example of the why and how: http://gaming.stackexchange.com/questions/14438/why-doesnt-spotting-enemies-always-work

"mature?" I was expecting pictures of naked animals or lots of four letter words. I guess it was just written by another old fart.

Nice to know the timing though:

Hit Q once every two seconds and you can do it forever without taking a break.

In my experience, the absolute distance limit is about 300 yards, maybe just a little more.

I've thought of the overheat factor (though I didn't know it was called that, or what the stats were - thanks for the link Skags!) so I've consciously held off when it seems to be happening, but I find it doesn't make a difference.

It's not a consistent thing, like every game, but pretty random. I thought it might be ping related. Even though I've got fairly high speed internet, 25Mb / 3Mb, my pings on the server are usually in the 100's. I'm not sure why that is.

The purple spot I'm talking about is definitely a circle. I thought it was an artifact, but it only happens when I'm recon, and it shows up at different locations on the screen. I thought it might be me being spotted, or some kind of hack. I'll have to google it.

5 seconds later - [ame]http://youtu.be/bhRc9C8BkW8[/ame]

He's not recon though.

I've never seen that, now with two different computers and three video cards over the last two years.

(But I don't drink as much as you guys either.)

What is all this talk about circles and squares and drinking?

All of my spot icons look like this!

On mine it depends on what terrain or things that im shooting. I see occasional small purple and green dots on my screen. Nothing as big as the video you shown papa but just occasional small dots. ive got them on heavy metal standing on the small hills behind b vads shooting through the trees and rocks.

Is this the spots your seeing. LOL

I really don't drink much. I've had a bottle of liquor in my drawer for about 2 months now. Haven't touched it since I opened it.

I'm pretty much the same way. I've got some mead on the go, and some that's ready to drink but I don't like the buzz like I did when I was younger. (If you guys like messing around with diy, try easy mead recipe. I've tried a few different fruits - don't use lime, trust me. But it's nice once in a while.

Nowadays I prefer a less painful and safer way of getting high. The bod just can't deal with hangovers anymore.

I had the worst hangover of my life about 2 weeks ago so my drinking quantity fell off pretty quickly after that. That is saying a lot since I definitely don't drink every week. Hell a beer a week is probably about my average. #collegelyfe

What your seeing is the Default no texter that frostbite uses.

Somehow this discussion went from spotting to drinking...I think some of us need to hit up some bars tonight. Not me though, my line of work makes me reek.
