Question for Comic Nerds (Marvel/DC)

As I type this, I'm 30 minutes into X2. My wife and I are watching the whole Xmen trilogy. And I can't help but wonder:

Does it bother you die hard fans that us newbies are just now getting excited about Xmen, Avengers, Hulk, etc?

I grew up with wolverine and iron man toys but I never truly understood who/what they were.

Are we posers for saying g how much we love them after watching just one movie? Or are you glad that more and more people (who hadn't read the comics) are getting interested?

There are so many adaptations of our favorite (and God knows, LEAST favorite) comic book properties and characters out there that I feel it is impossible to write off any given one as "inferior." As a comic book reader who actually purchases books off a shelf at the brick and mortar retailers, I am just happy that people are enjoying the property at all. Iron Man, Spider-Man, Batman... I love the fact that anyone is excited to experience these characters that I am growing up with right now.

I think the main problem comes when movie-goers claim to know more about the characters/properties in question. Comic books come out in monthly serials, so the amount of devotion we have to go to the store and form over money EVERY WEDNESDAY can leave us a tad defensive. This is no secret.

But I am very excited you're experiencing these new things. Maybe one day YOU'LL love these characters so much that it would inspire you to pick up the comics along with the rest of us, and save the genre!

Its good that you're getting interested in it.

I would recommend more than just the trilogy though.

X-men Origins Wolverine, X-men First Class, etc.

Well, I got into comic books because of the Hellboy movies and now I have like 10 or 11 books on my pull list. So, in my case, these adaptations actually got me interested in the medium.

Honestly though, comic books are something worth getting into...only real issue is that it's usually a bit expensive to get into some of the longer running series. Anyway, find a series that interests you and pick up an issue or a collection.

I look at comics as art. I love the stories and each story is different. Watch Spider-Man from 2002 and then watch the one from 2012 and while the same story, totally different. The comics are similar in that sense.

I was just having a discussion with my wife a few weeks ago about Spider-Man and how he has had like 24 different costumes in his life time. I think that's amazing. I am all for more people enjoying and loving that which I spent years enjoying.
