For those of you with the Arma series, be prepared to experience a major challenge. Arma 3 is one of the most realistic military simulator games out there. If you thought Day of Defeat's Realism Mode was true to real life combat, then you're in for a treat.
Arma 3 features a huge variety of vehicles: tanks, airplanes, helicopters, light armored transport, pick-up trucks with mounted weapons, and even submarines. Yes, that's right, this game has just about everything! The only things missing are spaceships.
As far as weapons go, there are so many that we can't fit them all in this thread. All of the weapons are either actually used by real life soldiers, or based on real designs. Each weapon can be fully customized with scopes, sights, ammo, and more, whatever the mission calls for. You can engage targets thousands of feet away with high powered rifles, flood enemy units with thousands of rounds a minute with Machine guns, and cause wanton destruction with missile launchers and high explosives. This is only a taste of what you'll get to experience with this huge arsenal.
The maps are not big, they are massive. For example, Altis, the main island in Arma 3, is 270 km?, or about 167.8 mi?. To put that in perspective, if you were driving at 50 MPH, it would take you 30 minutes to get from one corner, to another.
If you've played a lot of video games, we all know that the so-called 'hero' always manages to die in 3 inches of water. Well, you can rule that out when playing Arma 3. From submarines to deep sea combat with harpoons, the water is not a limit, but another opportunity. All while doing this, don't forget to take in the sights and especially the wildlife. They range from small rabbits, to man-eating sharks!
Arma 3 is one of the biggest games to be released in 2013. Be warned: this is not the next Call of Duty or Battlefield game with kill-streaks or playground-sized maps. Arma 3 is a warfare simulator and might not be for everyone. The controls are very smooth, but require a high learning curve as Arma uses every key on your keyboard. Most of your actions are still done through a scroll wheel or your gear options. Your brain might not explode right away, but it will at some point after you truly experience how amazing Arma 3 is.
So if you have some spare cash, we highly recommend picking up Arma 3. It is currently $59.99 on Steam. While you are at it, you can also grab their newest DLC; Karts! What began as an April fools joke got such a large reaction from the community that the developers released it. For the tiny price of $2, you can enjoy super high speed (almost 100 MPH) go-karting action throughout the scenic locales of Arma 3!
