[poll] New Video card

hey guys... i'm planing to get a new video card within the week so i need your guys opinion... so here goes... i'm slowly building my new computer... first video card then the rest but i'm keeping the same hard drives, powersupply, fans, case and cd drives. Every thing else will be replaced but anyways lets get back on track

As of now i'm running on a EVGA Nvidia Geforce 256mb 7800GT CO Superclocked which runs most games on its highest settings or allmost highest... but i'm going to do the big switch to vista so i want a DX 10 card

I been looking at video cards around the 300 dollar range such as the Nvidia GeForce 8800 GT 512MB or the ATI Radion HD 3870 512MB but i would like whats the big difference which one performes better is there a site on the web that i can see side by side comparisons and other stuff like that... any useful information is welcome ... also the ATI Radion HD 2900Pro has striked my interest since i heard that once over clocked it runs as good as a 2900 XT which is a pretty decent card which is also more then 300 dollars too and but the 2900 pro is much cheaper then which i might be able to get 2.
 
I have 2 8800gt's and they own. i couldnt wholeheartedly live with myself and not recommend it
 
I have a 3870 and it's been great for me but, honestly, you can't loose either way. Not good advice seeing as to how you're seeking it but I just went with if you've had nVidia and liked it stick with it and if you've had ATI and liked it stay with that. This is my 3rd ATI card and they've all been good to me but I won't argue that nVidia is ownage.
 
I have an 8800 GT, and i have not had a single problem with it. i would recommend it to anyone with the cash to get it.
 
8800gt FTW at the moment... I use 2 of them.

The 8800GTS on the G92 platform absoutley rocks. Depending on your budget spend accordingly!
 
Since both of those cards are practically the same, all of the comments made in this thread are purely fanboyism. Go with the cheaper one.

Seriously, I can't get around how poor the Catalyst driver packages are next to the nVidia drivers.

Sigh... have you ever USED catalyst driver packages? Or are you just saying that because you're a die-hard fanboi.

Seriously, same cards, same drivers, same customer service. Buy the cheaper card. Whether that be Nvidia or ATI.
 
ATI does suck but they are cheaper and pretty good....if your going for price go for ATI but for a little extra performance go for Nvidia.
 
I think it's more of an arms race than a hands down "card/company x is better than card/company y," as I've seen ATI cards that were better than NVIDIA had on the market at the time, and vice versa. For a long time, NVIDIA worked with a lot of game developers to get their custom hooks supported in more games, which meant that games worked better with their stuff, but I have now seen lots of games with ATI branding as well. It's kind of a crap shoot, really.
 
I've never had an ATI card so I can't really compare...

I'll have to go for the Gt8800 as I have one... and I like the word Nvidia.. Sounds nice..

Tom's hardware would be the best place to go. They do honest reviews and they have various performance charts.

I personally bought myself an ATi HD3850, and it performs exceptionally well for the price I got it at. ($200~)
It's capable of running every source game to date at absolute highest settings at 1280x1024, and Crysis on all high settings at 1280x1024 at around 30 FPS.
And it supports DX10 to boot.

The real factor in my decision on what to buy was the price, I couldn't afford anything high end, so I compared medium-high end Nvidia cards to ATi cards, and the HD3850 was the better choice for me.

ok guys thanks for helping me out... i just picked up my 8800 GT and it runs great, major performance increase.... once again thanks for you help guys
 
Yeah catalyst drivers aren't that great but I've had about the same number of problems with drivers from ATI and nVidia lately. I guess the one case I can make for ATI in the drivers department is that the install for Vista is amazingly easy and fast. nVidia, however, feels like it has a LOT more controls to OC. I'd agree and go with the cheapest one.
 
If you check any benchmarks you will see that the Nvidia easily outperforms the ATI. Don't trust me, look around.
 
i been usin nvidia since way back in the day.... one time i switched to ati.... i think i toped 110 on the way to return it

musta been my system but oh did it run slower
