Let's take stock of a few things first before we go any further.
There are many of us who have a job and do not appreciate the thought of coming to a gaming community as a second one, me included. I think it's a plainly wrong-headed approach. Corporations are aware that work sucks and try to make work fun. There is a pervasive sense that this community has made gaming into work. I disagree fundamentally with that philosophy. Nonetheless, I have met with higher-ups who have questioned me on why Egypt is still here. I consistently argue to keep it. People above me are arguably dissatisfied about Egypt's place on GameTracker. Currently, it is in the seventy-ninth percentile; I'm personally fine with that and I bet most of everyone else is, too. So, to answer the question as to why we have such a slavish devotion to numbers, that question must be directed to my superiors. I have struggled to disabuse this division of that mentality, which was once so prevalent a few years ago and did nothing for us.
Now, why call out certain people? There are but so many ways I can wave red flags at the people who love Egypt the most. I don't want to see Egypt go. I bet there are people who feel even more strongly about that than me. The method may be harsh, but I have received many strong responses from acting as I have. In my mind, that is sufficient. I want you to be aware of how dire the matter is. Some of you may say that you already knew, that being called out thus was excessive. Well, I was overzealous.
I apologize for making anyone feel guilty, under-appreciated, or unwelcome. That mistake is mine alone and I hope to restore some modicum of your confidence in me by resolving this in an amicable, beneficial way.
As it was put to me, some people feel that the FFTF has "tryhards" who empty the server when they come to fill it or that the FFTF will give up when it isn't interested in trying. I cannot run down and chastise every person who played the game the way he wished to when we're filling servers. Similarly, I can't chase after every person who professes a love for Egypt and demand his or her presence in the server at all times. Doing the same thing on the same map every day is unnatural for most people.
My only critical observation is this: there is an entire Steam group ostensibly dedicated to Egypt. Its members are the ones I see in Egypt the most. If its members can work independently to sustain Egypt, so much the better. I'm not saying it's the eGOptians' fault that Egypt is our lowest-ranked server, but I am hoping they can be creative in their narrower window of concern than Leadership or the FFTF.
We all know that Valve did us no favors with QuickPlay. So what? Lately, all of our servers have been pushing green and we need to go with what we have until Valve undoes that unholy mess. I'm not interested in losing a server, but more importantly, I'm not interested in losing the bonds I've established with different people whom I'd not have met but for Egypt. Those bonds are what make this a community. I would guess those bonds are more important to most of you, moreso than a single, specific server. If so, we have more than enough common ground to keep Egypt, and indeed this whole division, going strong.
