Mother board prob

When I put 2 GB of the DDR2 667 1GB sticks in there, it won't start up. I made sure I put them in the DDR2 slots and not the DDR slots. When we take one stick out it will start up. the specs say it can take 2 GB of RAM. We've gotten a replacement board and it has the same problem. any ideas?

Time for some process of elimination.

You have two slots, slot A and slot B. You have two memory sticks, stick C and stick D.

1. Does the system boot with stick C in slot A?
2. Does the system boot with stick C in slot B?
3. Does the system boot with stick D in slot A?
4. Does the system boot with stick D in slot B?
5. When it fails to boot, how does it fail to boot? What do you see? What does it say?

Answer me those questions and we'll go from there.

It doesn't matter which stick is in which slot, just so long as there is only one stick... we have also got replacement RAM.

And by fails to boot I mean nothing comes up on the screen. you here the fans and everything, but nothing is displayed on the monitor. it will start up if there is only one stick though.

Did you actually try all four placements or are you just saying that? It's important for us to establish that both of the chips work individually in both slots.

My dad did most of the switching around, but I'm pretty sure he did. He wouldn't of came up with that kind of conclusion if he didn't try.

What RAM is this specifically? Make and Model.

Also, was the RAM purchased in a 2GB kit or separately?

purchased in a two piece kit, OCZ SDRAM. the link should provide enough info.

From what I understand, your computer boots with only one RAM chip in, doesn't matter which one?
If so, then its a mobo problem. Otherwise it's most likely a RAM problem.

Also if you get any beep error codes or anything of the like, it would be useful to tell us.

Actually, it could just as easily be RAM. It is rare, but I have encountered errors in chips that only present when paired with a chip lacking the errors. It's vastly more likely it's the motherboard, but 2 for 2 makes it less likely. Of course, I've never even heard of that company, so who knows- 2 for 2 might be their regular average.

Basically, without getting a more detailed error message your option is really only process of elimination. OCZ usually makes pretty solid chips, so you might want to try replacing the board first. And maybe not getting the exact same board? Try an MSI that'll accept the RAM and CPU you've got. I've always had good experiences with them.

Actually OCZ has really good tech support, so they're gonna send us a different model of RAM to see if that works.

And there aren't any error messages, the monitor will stay completely blank not even open the bios.

Your motherboard should have some means of notifying you of errors. Either by a defined series of beeps or a set of lights on the back panel (or, if you're unlucky and it's badly designed, the lights can be on the board itself). Check the manual for the board, there should be a section in there that will allow you to identify any error alerts.

No beeps when I power it up. Absolutely nothing happens. %-6 cept' the fans turn on and that is it.
