TV monitor doubling as PC monitor issue

Hello,

I use my Vizio 19 inch TV monitor as my computer monitor also. The problem is that when I start up most or all of the games in my Steam library, the monitor flashes on and off quickly and repeatedly during game play until I turn it off and on with the power button. I was wondering if anyone knew of a way to fix this problem. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!
 
If you don't have your pc set up right for two screen's. It will do that, You must have a program or your Video card must be able to suport that many. I have 3 hooked up, a 19 inch, 21 and my 60" tv hooked up to my pc

That's not the issue; he's using his TV as his computer monitor. Not a monitor+TV for dual-screens.

Not sure what's the cause, but what's the GPU and TV model you're using? I'm wondering if it's something with the refresh rate, or the gpu/mem clocks...

If its just video games that cause the issue it could easily be the aspect ratio of his monitor. A 19 inch vizio is hard to tell. I had the same issue with my old 24 inch TV. 16:9 but most games read it incorrectly.

Check your resolution. I used to have an issue similar to this. If its all correct then I would look in to changing the HDMI cable. If it still proceeds I would definitely look at your graphics card... You could have heating issues or your HDMI port might have a faulty pin when under load.
 
I think the full name is the TV model is: Vizio VA19L HDTV10T, according to the user manual. I think it's retired as I don't even see it on Vizio's website (it was purchased back in 2009). Going to be completely honest, not sure what GPU is.

Graphics card. What graphics card do you have? Did you attempt any of the things I have mentioned?

My graphics card is the XFXAMD Radeon HD 7870 2GB GDDR5 2DVI/HDMI/2 Mini Display Port PCI-Express Video Card FX787ACNFC. Do I need to check my resolution on the TV settings itself, on the computer, or in each individual game? Also, no, I did not change out the HDMI cable.

Check the resolution on the individual game in the games settings and make sure its set to the same resolution your TV is set to. Or try a smaller resolution in the game.

The native resolution is 1366x768. But the site says it supports 1920x1080. I'd say change your resolution to 1366x768, in case it's achieving 1920x1080 through some frame rate wizardry.

There is a difference between 1080i and 1080p and its in a native resolution you are reading. Meaning its native (the LCD panel on the screen) is 1366x768. While its maxed resolution can support up to 1080i.

1080i: Interlacing means that the TV is producing the picture every other line, once it hits the bottom, it starts with the 2nd line and goes though each of the other lines, and it does this at 30hz(frame rate)

Thats your issue. You are trying to run a 1080p resolution which acts in a much more demanding way. Its pushing 60hz at all the lines at once for a crisper picture. That is probably causing you to see the black screen from time to time
 
Yeah, in all my games the guy who built the computer told me to put it to the native (1366 x 768). How would I stop the TV from pushing itself too hard?

You dont. You just set the resolution in the game you were playing to the native resolution and consider it good. It should stop. If it continues then you should check your HDMI cable. If thats not the problem it could easily be a graphics card issue.
 
I have somewhat of an update on this. The issue is not game-related. As soon as I turn my computer back on from hibernate, and turn on the TV, after a few minutes the screen starts to flash black, and will continue flashing on and off until I restart it. I only need to restart it once. Still looking to get this resolved if anyone has an idea... :\
