Howdy all.

Perhaps it was my poor navigating, but I haven't seen a reason why the map Strand was removed from the DoD:S rotation server. This is just my opinion, but I think that's one of the best maps the game has to offer. As a matter of fact, that map is a good chunk of the reason I came back to Steam again after almost a year of absence. Soooo many hours spent in the 24/7 Strand server back when eGO had it. Anyway, please feel free to offer thoughts on the matter, either for or against, but I was just hoping to get the discussion going regardless of the final decision.

Thank you for your time & consideration.

We had it on the server for a little bit, but every time we would get the server started, if it switched to Strand it would completely empty out except for eGO members

Yeahh I hear ya. When I see these server-clearing maps come up, I have good reason to believe the loss of players stems from a loose grasp of the map geography & the proper tactics that should or can be applied to it. I had thought if (& I don't know if this can be done) the home page that pops up after joining the server or when the map changes, can cater to those who don't know the map or a means of attaining victory while playing it. If that's not the case (if there's only 1 pop-up allowed per server), then perhaps instituting a policy where if the teams are "stacked", then players of higher skill levels, whether it be tactical, technical, or applied, volunteer to switch teams in order to assist an attack or defense. Now I know having a policy in place negates a good part of "volunteering", & people, more often than not, just do what they do, but the main reason I joined =eGO= in the first place was because of its players & their willingness to enforce a pleasant, friendly, yet competitive atmosphere for all; I'm hoping the community would invite, & step up to such a challenge. If that seems far too much to ask, I can appreciate that. I only feel that this map's more than worth perpetuating, rather than letting it fade away

While I wish it could work that way, it probably never will. eGO has never, and will never, enforce team switching. The bad part about strand is almost immediately you'll have 2 MGs and 2 Snipers on the Axis side making it impossible for the Allies to get up the beach. I enjoy strand once its full (Kind of, it doesn't take me much to rage) but getting it started is my kryptonite.

I really miss strand too. While I realize that eGo has its reasons for switching it to a rotation server, could it at least be available for nomination on the rotation server?

Strand is definitely a map that requires team work and communication to be effective. Strand forced me to voice-chat with my team and met a lot of great eGo players that way.

I realize that on a rotation server, when strand comes up, it can clear out the server... but these days it seems like the rotation server is empty more often than not anyway.

Strand is a great map, but the problem we have had with it is the same problem we had when we had a 24/7 Server for it. The server was great full, but trying to start it up proved difficult when the axis team would load up on MG's and Snipers and camp the beach. The core group of Strand players quit playing the map eventually, and just like Donner and Flash in the past, when that core group of daily players leaves, it becomes hard to populate the servers. Keep an eye out in our event threads, we occasionally play Strand for Sniper events.

Navigation skills are a bit off matey, might want to consider taking a course in advanced navigation. Those compasses can get VERY complicated.

It was a lot easier to populate Strand than it was to populate the rotation server.

Really? Cause I spent about 6 months trying to get the server to fill up with zero luck as soon as some camping player would join up on the axis or teamstack the axis with MG's and Snipers causing everyone to rage quit on the allies side.

We had zero luck filling the strand server once the regulars quit playing regularly. Then to appease the people who play it regularly we added it to the rotation server, it would get voted on and again as soon as the map loaded, people left the server.

We tried to restricting weapon classes on Strand, it didn't help. Eventually you get to a point where if there is no regular player base to keep the random people coming back, you have no server. We saw it with Flash, we saw it with Kalt, and we have seen it on Donner. Rotation is still a developing server selection, we are working on building a player base for it. Some days it even populates itself, not for a long time, but with some work and some map changes and selection its a work in progress and we as leadership are not quite ready to give up on it yet.

In a perfect world, we would have a 24/7 map for every map. I get that it can't be done. I personally don't play on rotation because I never see the same players for more than one map and I think one of the fun parts of the game is strategy, something someone as dumb as me has a problem with on maps they haven't played for 500 hours.

Don't give up on rotation. I just miss my Strand, that's all. Nobody needs to get upset.

Don't get me wrong, I am not upset, it just seems every few weeks we get a "where is Strand thread" and everytime we have to explain why it doesn't exist. Its like beating a dead horse :facewall:

His Scottish sarcasm doesnt translate well being typed, anyways, shut up Nicoll :)

One thing I could say, that I believe Anni already had suggested, is that once all of the regulars stopped playing, it sat empty more often than not. The Rangers did everything they could to kick start it, but it's near impossible with 4 axis players (2 snipers, 2 MG's) against 2 allied players. Those 2 would get wrecked on the beach repeatedly, with no one offering to jump over and help, and would leave 1 by 1. 1 more would join, quickly see what was going on and leave himself. I even had to rage quit on that map more often than actually playing on it with any kind of population.

It's an older game, and while I think that server was popular at one point, sadly it just isnt anymore. Not enough to justify having it sit empty. The rotation server is another issue altogether, that one is just a toddler, time will tell if it will work or not.

I think the best bet to get more attention and have more fun on that, would be to suggest it to one of the EC's to be an event. If we do it enough times, and people end up having fun, perhaps it could make its way back to the rotation map list, but I think we need to start small. I for one would rather enjoy some strand events.

I know I have been burning up the drop box with this but, I would love to see Strand back up in the top 20 world rank spot again!

Any chance to at least make it nominatable on the rotation server?

I play/check daily, and over the past 3-4 weeks, the rotation server sits empty more often than not anyway, so it's not like dod_strand is clearing it out.

We had it on the rotation server, and when we were trying to fill it, a couple of people would vote for it and select it, then we would go there and lose everyone that was helping us fill the server. Its not a sustainable map to use when trying to fill a server. Only when its full is it a map that would be an option and at this time the rotation server is not full enough to implement the Strand map on it.
