Tips On Changing Cases

I have an HP Pavillion m7750n, and any HP owner would know that there is not a lot of space to work with within their cases. That becomes even more evident when you see that I piled in an 8800gt and a Thermaltake Mini Typhoon cooler in there. I have a case from a failed BYO computer that is just lying around, with the faulty motherboard still in it, and I was wondering if I could move everything from my HP into this Ultra case. A couple of things that i am worried about is the fact that i can get pretty forgetful, and may forget the placement of wires, or that the cords for the front panel may not have matching places on the HP motherboard or even that the current power supply is too small to fit in the new case and i will have to attempt to put in the power supply from my 'dead' project.

Has anyone here done anything like this before, and does anyone here have any words of advice for this sort of action?
 
Well you don't really have to worry about mis connecting wires, usually if it fits it will work haha. Just touch your case every little bit to discharge, better to be safe than sorry. Don't get mad! And if this is your first time moving stuff then you now have a chance to get the dust off of everything. It's not hard don't worry.
 
Its pretty easy since most of the cables are pretty easy to figure out where they go.

Leave cables plugged into something....like your CD rom and or hDD...leave the cable hanging from them to avoid confusion.

4 pin power cables only go in one way. So if it dosent fight, turn it upside down.

Its all pretty easy.

The only thing might be your HP power supply. Some of thoes power supplies are dedicated for shapes of certain cases. ATX size is a standard for most tower cases. You can test fit the HP to see if the holes line up for the screws.

Cords from the HP case like power, leds are pretty universal. You shouldn't have a big issue with that.

sorry to double post, but i have encountered a roadblock in the rebuilding of my pc. the original HP had both a front panel with USBs and headphone jacks and all that fun stuff along with a tv tuner, all wired together, but the case that i am using does not have a spot for the panel. the space is either too small or too large, depending on if i try to fit it through the floppy drive area or the cd drive area. the case is an [link=http://www.ultraproducts.com/product_details.php?cPath=13&pPath=411&productID=411]Ultra Aluminus ATX Full-Tower Case[/link], if that helps at all. i tried to fit the included USB drive bay thing, but the audio jacks on my motherboard are not labeled, and each section for audio is split into its usage. if i can get this fixed, the rest should go smooth and be back on the servers by the end of the weekend.

how can i fit a panel in there, or if not, how is the audio plug split into section, so that i can try and put the drive in
 
Arent there audio jacks behind the pC?

You might be able to pick up a USB header to put into the rear of the computer...like where the PCI slots are.

Very hard to tell what your reffering to without pics...but what do you really use on that front panel?

If you pickup a USB header for the rear of the pC... Do you have audio jacks on the rear of hte comp also?

sorry for not saying this sooner, but i finished moving everything over, and i have the old front panel almost hanging out the front. i use it for the easy to access usb ports and headphone jacks, along with the fact that i need to have that part within the case to use the tv tuner, since the cords go from the motherboard to the panel, and then to the tuner. i have pics from the disassembly process and i can get one from the finished project.

sorry about that, that was me and i hope i didnt break any rules. i was eagerly awaiting responses for the forums wisdom, and, now that i look back at it, it was stupid, but i set firefox to refresh every 15 sec... sorry of it wasted bandwidth or anything.
 
yea that takes me back 2 the good ol days when i transferred my kit from my old systemax case into my current case (even tho i will admit that i cant stand the case now) but thankfully i never really had any issues w/ switchin everythin over 2 my current case.
