Auto move to spectate/kick for AFK

Hi guys,

Sorry if this has been brought up before, but is there a particular reason our Day of Defeat: Sources servers don't have auto AFK management? For example, our Team Fortress 2 servers automatically moves AFK players to spectator and then eventually kicks them for persistent idleness. I'm curious if it has anything to do with the age of this game or what the different might be, as it would save the admins a lot of time. Thanks!

From what I can see, TF2 came out prior to DoDs so I don't think it would have anything to do with age, unless there's a script or something missing from DoDs that's in TF2 that the program would require.

That aside, I agree it's a useful tool.

Not sure of the reasons as to not having it enabled. (Maybe due to people needing to spectate or something like that.) Either way there are tools for auto afk management and spectate kick's. I know that a lot of servers (at least in the past) did not like them, but, maybe ask one of the DL's they probably know the best about it.

I am going to pull something straight from the eGO UAT (Unified Admin Training) for all steam games, DOD:S and TF2 included.

"There is no reason to kick players from the server when they are AFK unless the server is full. If you have the ability, move them to spectator after first attempting to get a response from them. If the server fills up, and slots are needed, you can now kick any specs that don’t respond to you. If you don’t have move-to-spec ability, kick the player when 1) they don’t respond to you, and 2) a slot is needed for active players."

If we only have 10 players on a server, there is no reason to have an AFK player kicked, let them stay there and seed for us! If we used an auto AFK kicking system we would not be able to do this.

To add onto this^

Like Super said, let them seed for us. In all honesty we need all the traffic we can get to our servers. If we're auto kicking AFK's that are seeding in a server of less than 10 people, that's just affecting the player list numbers really. If I go onto a server list and want to join a server and play a game, I want one with a decent amount of people. I'd rather play a game with 15-20 people than a game with 5-10 so I'm more likely to join a game that is within that higher range. Even if I go in there and find a few AFK's in spec, its still not worth it to exit the game server and find a new one unless half the server is in spec. Its basically an easy draw in.

DoD doesn't have as much traffic as the more mainstream source games so its essential that we have these backbone type maintenance strategies. An Auto Spec plugin might suffice but auto kick definitely would harm more than help in most situations

This is from my own personal experience and how I deal with AFKs/specs. If they've been AFK for a few rounds, move them to spec. Let them sit in spec until the server gets full. Give a general warning and wait a round or two. From there, start kicking ONE spec at a time. Allow for a new player to fill the spot left by the recently kicked spec. Once the server is full again, kick another spec. Continuous cycle until there are no specs left and everyone is playing. That's just how I do it. Keeps the servers full and lets everything move along smoothly.

Instead of having it kick them, why not get something that auto-moves them to spec after a certain amount of time?

The chance of the server becoming full with many AFK's in spec and no admin on will keep this from working very efficiently i think. Also with an afk manager it may kick an admin who is in spec recording a demo which needs to be at least 5-7 minutes I think minimum. Or the admin could be helping a new member or prospect with TS or other issues.

Personally I would love not to have so many AFK to deal with sometimes. But there are enough admins coming and going that there's almost always one available on every server at all times...well maybe not Avalanche.

And the deciding factor was probably technical anyway. Balancing server addons can be tricky and a downright pain in the ass causing potential downtime for the server to figure out where the error is. The fewer, the better. Still be nice.....lol
