Ping Question

Hi guys..

I am not really all that technical when it comes to computers, so please excuse me for what is probably a simple question..

On my stats it has these details "185 ms (Latency: 92 ms)".

I realise that a higher ping = bad..

However I am not entirely sure at what point the ping really starts causing problems, the early 100's 200?

Also, is there a way of getting a better ping other than changing my Internet provider? Does other software running in the background cause issues?

Early 200's usually. But I've played fine on some Euro Servers with 150-197 general.

Ok cool....

Don't know if this will make a difference, but I have this program called Vista Smoker. It's got a button that Optimizes the pc for gaming. I can only assume it terminates any services that are unnecessary whilst its activiated. I haven't used at as of yet for TF2, mostly because I for got it was there. However do you think it would make much of a performance difference? Do background services effect ping?

The only things that _should_ effect your ping are other programs (or people) using your internet connection. However, shutting down all unnecessary applications can't hurt, and could help if your ping is related to system performance.

Cool...

I don't generally have anything deliberately running other than the firewall and virus scanner..

I'm hoping its not the system as its a Quad core with a GT8800 512.... Should me more than speedy enough to cope!

I have some questions for you.

When you run Speakeasy's Speed Test, what are your download and upload numbers? Make sure to run the test when no one is using the connection.

Does anyone in the house use peer-to-peer programs such as bittorrent?

What kind of connection do you have?

Yeah the connection really is important, but just so you know your fire-wall and virus scanner when running can drastically effect your ping depending on which one it is, especially Norton Antivirus products. If you have Norton I suggest you switch to something else ><

I'm currently at work as its 3pm in the uk... however I'll run that test as soon as I get home...

I can answer the other questions now though...

Cable Broadbad 10meg
No peer to peer

Cable goes into wireless router, pc is wired into the router. I have an Xbox 360 also wired but its always switched off when I am on the PC so I would assume that it wouldn't affect my bandwidth unless it was off.

Your ping is simply a measure of how long it takes a packet to travel between the client and server. If you're not dropping packets along the route and your ping is steady, you can play smoothly on a fairly high ping. I've played with 300-400 without a hitch and at the same time played with <50 and been jumping all over.

PingPlotter is an excellent utility to figure out where your high ping starts as well as to see how steady it is and if you're losing packets.

I'm based in the uk so I wouldn't expect those servers to respond as well as one here... However as the Edge servers are in the US I guess its a fair representation of what would be happening when I am playing

Honestly, speed doesn't matter so much. Your average broadband connection will almost always be fast enough for client/server traffic when playing a game unless someone on your line is eating up bandwidth. net_graph 1 in the console in game will give you a pretty good idea of how much your client is transmitting and receiving from the server.
