Last night, I was in the Dustbowl server before the midnight scrim, and noticed that some of the guys on my team (Blu) were dropping the F bomb quite a bit. I asked them a couple of times to stop, and they were nice about it ("Sorry, man, didn't know this was a PG server" kind of stuff. Not rude at all), but kept doing it.

I'm in no position to make empty promises about kicking/banning someone, so I sought the help of an admin, but I feel that I didn't quite have the right information nor the right approach.

So, the question is, what is the best way to make sure that you have all the right info to give to an admin so they can help you keep the servers a nice place to play?

This is what I do:

Warn the guy with text , and/or voice if he's in your team. I always do this kindly not to put oil on the fire. This usually works. Never tell him : dont do this or ill kick you , because if he sees you have no power , it WILL get worst.

If not come in here post a msg about it , so an admin can correct the situation. Asking an admin on vent can also be quicker.

Normally, when an e has problems with a server, I normally see them call someone of higher rank, but if you see someone who is a problem, pull up status, and get their ID's and if necessary, prepare to request that ban.

If the admin is in the game with you use the @ sign in team speak (u) and you will send a message to the admin channel that only admins can see.

Make sure to be specific as to what the offense is, and what you have done. For example: "@Player X has been using foul language and has been warned 2 times but continues".

The best way to get help though, is to be in Vent. There are almost always admins/advisors on and you do not have to rely on text messages that might be missed in game.

Nuedar

Also, you should add a few =(eGO's)= to your steam friend's so that you can toss out a quick IM with the steam overlay. If there's spaces open, you could talk to an =(eG)= too.

If it is done in text, status in console to get their steamid and write down the time it happened. Council can check the logs at that time and see it. If its voice, its a little trickier. If an admin is on the other team u for team chat then "@ need help" or something like that and it will be sent to only admins online on the server. Hopefully one will step up and help you out warning the user. I trust if an =(e)= says there is a problem, and after my warning, if they say it is continueing, I'll remove the person in question.

Hey, that's awesome info guys. Had kind of wondered that myself, and am glad for the tutorial. :)

If there isn't an eG or eGO in game message one in steam that's online to come in and take care of it.

I get messaged for that all the time and I have no problem what so ever coming to a server to squash stuff like that. That's what we're here for :)

I just added you to my steam friends so I'll be available to ya!

Excellent. Thanks! What happened last night was that I messaged an admin who wasn't in game, then realized that there was another (who I hadn't originally seen on the list), so I messaged him. However, I feel that I failed to convey appropriate information.

This will certainly help me in the future! Thanks again!

A comment for Cerberus (and anyone else) - when you're warning people, even if their offense was in voice, you should warn them in text. Since voice isn't recorded in the server logs, there's nothing for us to go back and look at if you need to request a ban. Typing it out in chat proves that you warned them, so they can't come back and claim that it never happened.

Thats right Sig, ALWAYS warn in text so that there is a record of your actions. Dont be affraid to ask questions like this guys, you cant learn anything without asking.

Got ya.

if they are on mic i will usually be nice and give em a verbal warning 1 or 2 times if i know its un intentional, usually the second i will try and sound more stern about it, if they continue to ignore me i will send another 1 or 2 text warnings befor notifying the admin's.

some make smart alec coments when i ask nicely but usually if i dont comment about that they will tone it down and help having to kick people out as our goal is really to fill the servers up :)

i know im no admin but i work in customer service and toning people down be what i do :-p

Yeah, an I've noticed that a lot of times people assume or act like they assume that any eGO member has admin and they usually listen to me if I ask them to stop. For exaple, there was a rather crude conversation the other day going on amongst the people with mics and I asked them to stop with the dirty language and such and they listened and even appologized. So, I bet most of the time the problems will come from individuals, not groups. Odds are, the good people will outweigh the bad ones knowing how active our members are in playing and how many of the people that play our servers are very kind. More of these type of threads. Props to Flippy Squirrel for asking good questions

I have a question, I typed "u" then "@" and typed my message and it seemed ineffective..is there something else I'm missing? Or is that truly all that's needed?

That is all the is needed. Press "U" to bring up the team chat, then type your message like this: "@ Hey, Existence. keeps swearing, please ban him".
They would probably say, "No way, hes so cool!" :D:D:D

A minor technical question, then. Would the U-@ combination only go to admins on your team, or would it still be directed to any admin on the server?

Admin-chat is seen by all admins on the server. It's keyed off team-chat because it's restricted in who it goes to.

Everyone that has posted has the right idea about "asking" the offender to stop instead of ordering it. Also make sure to use that magic word "please", if they come back with something else even more offensive or make a snide disrespectful remark then I pull out that shiney kick button and go to work. Lets keep this convo going, I like this alot :)
