i'm having problems with FPS lag in games where it drops too the 9 to 12 range where i can move right for awhile than jumps too the 200 or 300 range

makes it hard to play games

please advise or help

What games are you trying to play?

Is your RAM DDR2 800MHz? Your laptop has some old specs in it, it could just be obsolescence as you try to play new games. I personally would never recommend a Gateway.
 
mainly just counter strike source and was tiring cs go but that's pushing it wasn't too much of a issue till few days ago every now and than left for dead 2 but thats bout it

and no it's DDR 3 ram i do believe

I'm doubting that, but I may be wrong. When did you get this laptop originally? Having DDR3 RAM with a C2D and a 9800M GTS in a laptop isn't a combination I see or heard of before.

Have you ran your antivirus programs, and verified the integrity of your games on Steam? That can sometimes help.

My best guess right now is the laptop may be overheating, and its forcing the CPU/GPU to downclock itself. Are you using an aircooling platform to play on?

no i'm not a 100% sure bout what kinda ram it is forgot how to look it up

i've done disk clean up ran a sector scan on both hard drives done a defrag i've verified integrity of cs:s files i've run malware bytes, cc cleaner and avg antivirus and even installed razer game booster it's improved a lil bit but not alot after bout 5 10 mins in game fps drops to 15 to 20 and might jump up some

i've even called nivida tech support

Ok, We found that you leave programs open to long and it eats up your memery.
We did a system check fully with a reboot and that helped a little.
Last is the defrag did that help? If not next step is to uninstall the game and reinstall it.
 
Try to find a temp gauge; I'd be interested to see how its running under load. I'm thinking it forces the CPU/GPU to downclock if its overheating
 
I've done that for him. He ran a total of 3FPS 1 minimum under stress at 230 degrees. Three burn-in tests revealed similar results. The highest he got in one of the tests was 4FPS.

He bought this laptop from a friend of his used about a year and a half ago. Before that, his friend had it for 5 years.

It is my professional opinion that I suggest finding a new laptop soon or PC because eventually, your video card is going to give out and since it's shared with your CPU, that may or may not give out as well.

Ouch! 3 FPS with a temp of 230 degrees F in just 1 minute under stress? This laptop is dying bad.

Best temp fix is to clean it all out; open it up, put new thermal paste on, and get the dust and crap out. Also possible that a fan inside may have gone kaput too.

I agree with you Ric, a new laptop/PC is needed. It's 6.5 years old; it's not going to last much longer for gaming.
