After reading the stories written by Acefire and whoflungpoo, it made me think about my own eGO story. My first thought? Yeah I haven't done a lot compared to those two...I'm not a DL or an event coordinator. But it made me think about my own accomplishments and I'd like to share my own experiences and memories. Prepare for my novel.
I started my journey during the 2012 steam summer sale, when I picked up DoD:S. The first thing I did when I started it up was click servers, lowest ping, fullest server. That sever was 24/7 eGO Donner. I spent about 150 hours on that server, learning the game, meeting the people. I was never one for talking on the mic, I figured no one would want to hear my squeaky 12 year old voice. My birthday went by and I started 8th grade. Then one November day, a couple of members were recruiting on the Donner server and I decided I'd join and see what it was like. A friendly member (who I don't think is with us anymore sadly) named Perwild helped me out and walked me though registration. I felt so welcomed from all the replies on my application, and I knew this was going to be a good time.
I was e for about a year, mostly playing on Donner, not saying much. I didn't know about regular events or ventrilo, and I was never on the forums. The most interaction I got was saying hi to everyone in chat and calling bs
I guess I started getting a bit lonely with friends irl coming and going, so I started to be a little more social and get to know everyone better. I still didn't have a mic and I still didn't think anyone would want to hear me, but after a few months I got promoted. I was advised to sign up for an admin class. I figured if I was possibly going to be an admin, I should get a headset to communicate better to other players. So for my first admin class I had the means to ask questions and talk to the other eGs. It was so much fun.
I gained a bit of confidence with that class, so I started joining team speak to see what's going on. I almost remember everything...we were starting to fill up the kalt server and I jumped in to ts and said hello. Then megs said "who's that? Is that chief?" "Yeah it's me" "omg you talk!" Q tip jumped in a little late, "I don't think he has a mic?" "yes I do!"
I had also signed up for comp team tryouts, and I was the youngest that submitted an application (14 years old) Dodgy was also in the channel and he asked if I was actually 14, and he said I sounded older than that.
After that I had no worries about being a squeaky annoying kid, and everything was going awesome. I didn't make the comp team, but I was asked to be on the practice squad, so I could practice with the team, which I was over the moon about. That's why I was so sad when my schoolwork conflicted with DoD and I couldn't attend practices anymore. I still helped fill servers and played as much as I could.
April came by, along with it the Rank Annihilation Contest. Throughout the month of April we collected domination screenshots to get points to win a razer keyboard or mouse. I loved playing on the rotation server so I thought I'd help out and contribute a few screenshots. Well, a couple hours and dominating Megs 3 times later, I discovered I actually had the lead in the contest! I played every night, and had quite the lead. My new friend habs was also playing a lot, and was gaining up on me
I remember playing left for dead 2 once, and q tip messaged me on steam "you won't beat habs playing that!!!!" April flew by, and I finished with 600 points, coming first in the contest. It was an awesome experience and I met a lot of people playing on rotation that month.
I graduated grade 8 and got promoted during my 2nd semester of grade 9. I started playing more in realism and playing csgo with some dedicated players (Bruce lee, whoflungpoo, jack, rammy, between, sorry if I forget anyone :]) And here I am, finished my first year of high school, 15 years old, a full admin with the best gaming community on earth. I'll be around for a while, hopefully with many good times to be had. If you made it this far in my novel, thanks. See you all on the servers.
