Laptop replacement; need suggestions

Long story short, I broke the screen on my laptop, and because it's 2+ years old and is getting slow, I was thinking of getting a replacement. I wouldn't do any gaming (apart from Minecraft, most likely), so I don't need any super high priced, fancy laptop.

I don't want to spend more than $400 on the laptop. I was looking at getting an older Thinkpad or some laptop that wouldn't break the bank.

Thoughts and opinions? Like I said, I won't be gaming on it; I'd just be using it for taking notes in class and general stuff like that.

Yea that would work, not bad at all since IBMs are expensive. The ram and HDD though would be my only 2 complaints.

It's not a bad choice if you do not mind it being a Refurbished laptop with only a 30day warranty. I highly recommend you looking at a laptop with an SSD drive that runs the OS at least.

For him to get into a laptop that would cost $400 with any decent storage would be nearly impossible at his price point. If you could find one with over 100gb of storage on an SSD and still be able to play minecraft, I will applaud you.

I dont see what you mean by "an SSD drive that runs the OS at least." All hard drives can run windows 7/8 with no issues from my understanding? Did you mean run it at a fast speed?

The HDD size is my only complaint, but I was kind of expecting that much for that price in a Thinkpsd anyway. I may hunt around some more and try and find one a little lower priced.

Is there a specific reason you need something as strong as an i5 in it. From what you described something like a celeron amd or i3 with bigger hd sounds more appropiate.


Side note be careful buying refurbished 30 day limited especially on a laptop many times they die within the year also Bestbuy and walmart when it comes to real ultra budgeted laptops often times can be a very good source around the end of August.

I think what Ice meant is to have an SSD that is small enough to hold OS files for fast boot. My Lenovo has an 8GB SSD with my OS on it for faster boot. All my other files (personal files and settings) are all on my 1TB HHD. This saves a lot of money and gives you really fast boot times. Getting a larger one and putting select programs on there that you want to boot faster than anything else (games or steam or anything like that) would also work. It does make a huge difference to get an SSD to hold the OS on it at least and it would range from 30$ to 100$
