PUG's n stuff

Not the dogs of course I'm talking about pick up games I've always been somewhat interested in playing some semi competitive tf2 wether or not its in PUG's or whatever else there is I've never been able to find a definitive place to start there's so many different options I think. So I decided to cruise on down to forum town and ask people likely more knowledgable than me how do I do this does anybody know where I should start?

You can't use irc for pugs anymore well actually you can but no one really plays pugs were A LOT better and had way better players but tf2 center is the "thing" now it is a place to play comp but not really that great

I actually did get in to some pugs last night pretty fun honestly playing with people way better than me.
