After playing with spies for a bit on the 2fort server, I'm starting to think that demo isn't such a good disguise after all... namely because most demos have now learned that the sticky gun is the primary weapon to have out at most times, and I know that whenever I see one with his 'nade launcher out, I immediately spy check him.
I'm also finding that soldier is a good disguise when your goal isn't backstabbing, but just looking inconspicuous while recharging a cloak, because you always expect a soldier to have his rocket launcher out. It is slow, though, so you don't want to do any maneuvering with it on. Heck, I'll bet that a heavy disguise wouldn't be bad for recharging the cloak, 'cause I never think "spy" when I see a heavy.
Also, does anyone else use the trick where you disguise as a person on your own team to get over to their base, then change to an enemy disguise when entering it? I've been trying this under the notion that if they see a spy or one of their teammates running across no-man's-land to their base, they'll immediately alert the team of incoming spy. But if it's a demo or a pyro or whatnot, then they wont go on high alert. Plus it saves you from having to waste your cloak just to get to their base. Of course this trick doesn't work well when the enemy controls no-man's-land.
I dunno, I say all this but I'm still a terrible spy, as I'm sure many of you have seen. I think, as Lafinass pointed out, that it's all about how you wear your disguise.
