umm everytime i start to load a game my comp restarts...why does this happen? i can see the " preparing to play...." but they my comp restarts....it does this to TF2 and DoD.......plz help!
*Your power supply is unable to supply enough power to the graphics card during this type of use or your power supply is going bad.
*Your system is overheating due to lack of proper ventilation or dust buildup.
*Your memory is going bad.
There are some other possibilities, but these are the top ones.
I've had this problem before, not with steam, but with other applications and it's because the comp was overheating. Clean it up, possibly install another fan. Do you have/can you download an application and post your temps?
Another question would be: can you run any other graphics-heavy games just fine? If you don't, try downloading the Call of Duty 4 demo: [link]http://videogames.yahoo.com/events/call-of-duty-4/call-of-duty-4-demo/533701[/link]. Good luck!
SpeedFan is a nifty utility for temperature. But unfortunately, if the heat spikes drastically enough it can reboot the computer before the temperatures post. However, given that you haven't even gotten into the game yet, the load on your machine shouldn't have increased significantly yet. The power supply is significantly more likely. Do you play any other 3D games that work fine?
I just fought that same issue on my other rig that jackpot uses last night. He was trying to launch HL2 and it rebooted. It was corrupt video drivers.
Every case that I've seen so far that gives a reboot or d3d error have been vid drivers either being corrupt , or outdated as a matter of fact.
Before pulling out handfulls of hair troubleshooting hardware I'd definitely try drivers first. This rig did it with a PhysX driver problem. That was annoying lol.
I think he means who made the card itself, not the chip... like EVGA, BFG, ASUS, etc. Or does ATI make the whole cards now, too? I used a Visiontek Radeon 2600 AGP a couple months ago before building a whole new rig, and it needed special drivers from the Visiontek site... the standard ATI drivers wouldn't work.
I dunno what's up. Steam has been fine for me, and my Graphics Card is pretty crappy. It is an NVIDIA GeForce 6150, lol, then again, I play via laptop.
If it's a 3rd party manufactured ATI card let me know though. I'll find the ones you need specific to the card. These will work with all of them though, they are a "hotfixed" 8.1 driver that worked on my 2600pro in my other rig. Just install them over the top of the ones you have, don't uninstall/reinstall because it doesn't have the control center from what I remember.
Didn't you say it was AGP? Anyhow, here are the drivers that'll work. Jer is still having trouble with HL2 with these so I'm probably going to put him back to the ones in the other post I made but that one is AGP. Give these a try on yours and if you have issues, and yours is AGP and not PCI-e use the hotfix ones I put the link for earlier in the thread.
mine is AGP sorry there were 2 on the page and one was PCI mine is AGP ok so i got the hotfix one and i'll try it when i can....i have a lot of home work!
