Just got back from a trip to Australia and during the plane rides I got a lot of my reading back log finished so I figured I would share those musty tomes with you all :P

War In The Shadows: The Guerrilla In History by Robert Asprey

A broad overview of the historical role of guerrilla warfare. Probably will not appeal to everyone but it has some cutting insights into the failures of the American forces in Vietnam that echo current events. If you are into the history of warfare it is a must read.

Pickpockets, Beggers And Ratcatchers: Life In The Victorian Underworld by Kellow Chesney

Quite fun and a bit morbid, it is as the title says. If you have ever wondered how fresh dog poop and scraps of cloth fit into the Victorian economy this book is for you.:thumbup:

Rasputin by Ivan Nazhivin

I am not sure what it is. Maybe Russian literature is just not for me, perhaps it is the translation or my cultural ignorance. Just could not get into this one. Well written, extremely boring.

The one and only Russian piece of literature I've read and thought "wow that was good!" was Dostoyevsky's Crime & Punishment.

Brothers Karamazov - Boring
Doctor Zhivago - Depressing
War & Peace - Extremely depressing
Eugine Onegin - Boring
Anna Karenina - Depressing
 
Ha, glad to know it is not just me that finds some of the classic Russian pieces a bit stodgy, so thanks for that Ezekiel.

By the by, read anything that grabbed you by the boo-boo recently? I am always looking for something new :)
 
I'm reading Guerrillas & Revolution in Latin America: A Comparative Study of Insurgents and Regimes Since 1956 by Timothy Wickham-Crowley, which I'm reading for a class. I'm not reading anything for fun at the moment.
 
I'm busy reading the ingame text for borderlands, reading the amount of stattrak kills I have, and also reading my kill death ratio go up slowly on battlefield and planetside 2
 
I will come out and say it but I hated Crime and Punishment. I have ended up reading it about 4 times now in life and each time I find something more and more I don't like about it.

Reading This Book is Full of Spiders by David Wong. Almost finish and need to look for something new.
 
How to Win an Election by Quintus Tullius Cicero, for a class.

I just finished my reread of the Dresden Files, however. They never get old.

JUST finished (this week) doing the same thing.

It had been many years since I read the first ones, so with his new one that came out a bit ago, I finished up reading a different series I was working thru, then reread all the dresden books.

Butcher ranks WAY up there on my list...
 
Lets see, recent reads:
  • The 5th Wave - About how the aliens invade us, based on a young teenager named Cassie short for Cassiopeia. (Great Read)
  • In the After - Another book about an invasion of what seems to be aliens, no further details to be emerged. Also centered around a young teenage girl. Another good read of human extinction.
  • In the End - Book two to the book above. Countinues on the journey of the teenage girl as more details emerge about whats really happened to humans. If you read the first book you have to finish by reading the second.
  • All three of The Hunger Games - Good read, much better than the movie and I have only watched the first one. The books give so much more detail and more in depth to everything going on. The movies would be about 6 hours long at least just to match the books.
  • The Infinite Sea - The follow up to The 5th Wave. I just started in on this one so not to much to share only that it has been good so far.

So did you like the Codex Alera series too? I'm currently finishing up Dracula (the original by Bram Stoker) and The Graveyard Book (Neil Gaiman) for my book club.

I've read em twice.

2nd time was recently. Earlier this year or late last year.
 
I'm reading "Things Fall Apart" by Chinua Achebe. It's a very good story with lots of good examples of traditional African Literature.
 
Currently reading various political writings such as Aristotle's "The Politics". Very interesting pieces of writing to say the least.

Have you read Lovecraft? If not, go read Lovecraft. I'd recommend:
  • The Statement of Randolph Carter
  • Call of Cthulhu
  • Rats in the Walls
  • Pickman's Model
  • The Horror at the Museum

All of his stories are good, but these are definitely the best ones to start on.
