So, I've had this problem for a little while, and I feel as it's just now starting to get out of hand now that my phone is refusing to update apps due to lack of storage on my phone.

I got my Samsung Galaxy S3 Mini from my parents as a Christmas present last year– which is fine, since before I had the LG Octane... yeah– at least, that's before I knew that that phone would get very slow very quickly, and freeze for upwards of 5-10 seconds at a time. But, that's besides the point. The point is that my phone has 8 GB of storage, and what I think is 6 GB of extra storage via an SD card. Since this phone's purchase, I've spent 4.91 GB on apps alone. Which is fine, really, as I don't save much music or bulky photos on my drive. The problem however, is this.

Now, I see this and I notice, huh, I only have 411 MB (now 529 MB) left; I need to start uninstalling some apps and cleaning my cached data to free up some space.
Until I notice that I have 3.68 GB in "Miscellaneous Files" (now 3.69 GB). Well, I thought, that's odd. I take a closer look at what "miscellaneous" entails, and I find something very strange:

From what I can interpret... is my phone making a backup of itself on its storage?? Clearing these data doesn't clear this "System memory" distinction, either, so I can't touch it at all through traditional methods.

Any question on what's going on, and any way I can consolidate these data into a smaller package?

That's stuff that came loaded in the phone. Most of it part of the OS and probably files that the phone needs. You can tap on it and it will show you what files they are. Some you can delete if you want to but I wouldn't touch it unless I was a phone expert and knew that the files I was deleting wasn't going to interfere with how my phone would perform. You can always tap on it just to look at what's occupying the space
