I care more about what friends/fellow eGO members think of a game than some paid game critic.
 
I mainly base it off of trust-able review sites (rpg codex, Hardcore Gaming 101) and if it is a genre I enjoy. I never trust sites like Gamespot or IGN anymore.
 
They matter a lot to me. As a broke college student, I can't justify buying any game that a majority of people don't like... It's too much of a risk to me. I'd hate to have another Survival Instinct on my hands... :(
 
I used to only play games my friends recommended to me and I didn't even look at the reviews. After buying Aliens: Colonial Marines I stopped trusting my friends and started looking at the reviews.
 
Depends what the creator(s) have provided. If, say they have a demo or a ACTUAL trailer showing ACTUAL gameplay, then reviews don't matter to me. Unless it is a AAA game. Furthermore, I do not use Metascore, as most of the time, there are just trolls there giving bad reviews, and don't get me started on IGN :mad_old: .
 
EDIT: I forgot to mention that I haven't purchased any games recently, due to a lack of money, but my previous post showed what I would judge when it came down to buying a game
 
I don't trust game scores. Some games have super high score just because of it's hype. I always read the forums for the games first before I buy it. It's on the forum where you find the true critics.
 
NOT looking at them is kind of a bad move since you tend to look at reviews of customers for items online as it is (at least I HOPE you didn't buy that Cannon printer or Ford Pinto review unseen...). But putting too much stock in them can be just as detrimental to your gaming experience as not paying attention to them at all can be.

Example: Ride to Hell: Retribution. Absolutely horrid game in terms of actual gameplay, voicework, graphics, story, etc., but an absolute goldmine of hilarity that might be worth it to some people just for the rofls.
 
I'll usually read them if a game that I was looking forward to gets a bad scores from a lot of sites or a game that wasn't on my radar gets great scores. Like Shadow of Mordor, didn't even know it was coming out and some of the sites I go to gave it fantastic reviews and all of a sudden I was super hyped for the game...on a side note Shadow of Mordor is a pretty fun game.
 
A review from a reviewer I respect is important, but metacritic is horrible and only damages the gaming community.

Some reviewers will read someone else's review and play about 10 minutes before they put in their review. Unreliable.
 
I don't buy many games these days, but reviews have never really mattered much for me anyway. I'm a pretty good judge of whether or not I'll enjoy a game.
 
Hit and miss. If its a game I want, I will get it regardless. If it is something I am on the fence about then I check reviews to help decide.
 
Metascore doesn't really affect my game choices, take for instance with goat simulator.
 
Other. Occasionally I will check a games review to see if there are any major negatives. If it's a game I want to play I will but it, they do not affect my decision.
 
I put other because reviews matter a lot to me when buying a game, but only when coming from certain sources that I trust.
 
Reviews can sometimes determine if I will buy the game, but mainly I look further into it, such as you tube clips of trailers/game play/etc... ask around if anyone owns the game and see what they think... But generally if its something I think I will definitely be into I will buy it.
