Yesterday someone on my steam F/List sent me a message saying WTF Dude? http : // screen - pictures. com / img _ 012.
I'm putting spaces in it, in hopes it doesn't make it a clickable link.
I copied and pasted it into a browser, and it was snatched up by Norton as a virus.
Then within the next 30 minutes, an intruder attempted to connect to my comp, also stopped by Norton.

If this is the same thing that happened back in 2009, if you click on it in the steam message sent to you, you will loose your steam account to a hacker, so DON'T click or copy & paste any links in any steam messages from anyone period
 
Yes, this has been back for a day or two now.

Happened to about 4 or 5 of my friends. Block them all.


Do not click on any links sent unless you do some background checks on that link.
 
Should we also forward this to the drop box? will that help? Im not sure there is anything they can do, but at least they could tell their respective divisions
 
Q-Tip please do, I put it here so most members could see it.
I'm headed to best buy in a bit, to buy a 120 GB SSD to put my OP system on, and the rest on my 1 TB HDD.
Even though I copied and pasted the link, they still keep trying to get into my comp so I might be off a couple days wiping my HDD, and installing my new SSD, and re-installing stuff.
 
As a safety precaution, may want to reset your password(s) since you did enter the link - best to be safe then sorry.

Quite frankly, getting tired of all the phishing bots n crap out there. Always seems to be a new phishing/hacking attempt or scam attempt. :|
 
Best bet would be to take it up with the leadership Tip, and considering having this 'problem' feature in the next clan-wide so everyone is aware.
Possibly taking this to featuring on the front page of the site too- outlining the general problem to the community, again, making them aware and knowledgeable about said scam.

Thank you for that, I actually just got one of them yesterday, but luckily I was on my iPad so I couldn't view it. I'll be sure to not view it.
Also: here's an idea. REPORT ANYONE WHO SENDS YOU A SUSPICIOUS LINK!!!!
 
I didnt drop box it, but posted it in leadership private. The others have been made aware, just be vigilant of your own steam messages. I usually dont open links unless someone in teamspeak says, 'here, you need to see this real quick'. Those I trust, have to say I havent gotten any others, but I will be sure to not open them

Good indicators that they are spam:

- Most if not all spam Steam profiles are level 0

- Private Steam profile

- Name history shows one other name "[unassigned]"

- You've never seen the name before

General rule I follow is anyone who adds you, and is level less than 5. Don't add.

Unless you know them or see them to be active. Then fair play.

Nicoll, so if you help someone new to steam sign up to our clan, and they are lvl 1, you won't add them?
 
Every time I place something on the Market for sale I get a ton of friend requests. Several of my friends have had their accounts taken in the past through links like you describe and also from some Steam Groups. As a result I do not join any Group EVER, and anyone that sends me a random friend request gets blocked. Ultra paranoid? Ultra still have an account unhacked for 9 years. Be careful with Norton. All the tweaking in the world isn't going to stop a virus catered to infiltrate the most used anti virus software in the world. Nod 32 is what I use and it's amazingly good.

The low level thing might work Nicoll, but I don't care if they are level 50. If I do not know them, I do not add them.

My apologies for the bump, but figured I'd bring this up again -

While I was offline on Steam, a e-member had messaged me with a similar message as the one Dbad posted in the main post.

I didn't click on it, but just a note of caution to be careful with what sites you go to and what links you click on.

EDIT/ADD-ON:

If you do click on the link and it downloads a file, DO NOT change passwords or enter any passwords until after you've removed the file and run scans (virus scan, malware scan, etc)

If it didn't download a file, then you should be good as far as passwords go, although if you want to anyways you can change your passwords on a separate device just in case. Whatever you do though, be sure to run the scans.
