TF2 Crash

Okay so im playing TF2 everythings fine great get onto a server play for a minute or two then BAM my computer restarts spontaniously no warning it just happens.

Theres no error code other than when it boots back up it says windows has recovered from a serious error do wish to report it (the standard windows error thingy) So yeah im going to need your guys help to fix my piece of crap computer AGAIN! Thanks and if i sound pushy im sorry just had a really really bad day Thanks again

We had one of these recently. I believe it was suggested that such things can be caused by bad power supplies or bad memory.

Your problem is a very generic thing, your computer could have crashed for alot of reasons.

The only thing I can recommend is finding out if your computer saved some sort of log of what happened, and posting that here.

I had some trouble today because of my xfi drivers after flashing my BIOS for "better compatibility for xfi cards, go figure. Spontaneous reboots and BSOD's while trying to game...

That's the short version, I had WAY more fun than it sounds like lol.

Make sure your drivers are all up to date, etc. before troubleshooting hardware.

To help diagnose, you need to turn off the automatic restart option that you get with a hard error. To do that, right click on My Computer, go to Advanced, then click on Settings under 'Startup and Recovery' From there uncheck the box 'Automatically restart'

This should give you a BSOD instead of restarting on you.

This will only be helpful if the error occurs again, but if it does, you need to copy down the info on the BSOD.

Thanks all Troth I will try that as soon as i get back off of grounding which should be in the next week or so but i could possibly sneak and do it if my parents leave the house sometime and ill let ya know thanks again!

Right, what they said about turning off the auto-reboot. If it comes up with something like "IRQ_NOT_LESS_THAN_OR_EQUAL" you may have bad memory. I had this happen to me off and on for 2 years, worse when I played games, of course...

After much ado, I found that my problem was my motherboard had bad RAM sockets. ugh, that was a beast to figure out. new mobo, and now all is well. haven't had a crash in two months now

could a simple hard drive reformat fix this?
and if so how might i do it?
the error came up saying to check the space of my HD or my vid driver and i have so many viruses that im thinking to reformat...if you know how to please let me know thanks

If it's a genuine hardware issue, then a reformat won't help. But it never hurts to reformat and can cure an old windows install of its senility.

yeah that sounds like a good idea having 3 viruses on my computer that wont leave me alone! I do enjoy the popups though any way yeah how do you reformat your harddrive anyway?

Boot into your windows CD and reformat during the initial setup. Make sure you backup everything you care about though. And maybe try not getting more infections than a street walker, eh?

Well, you need to have another place to back up irreplaceable items (pictures, music, porn, etc.). Another hard drive, DVD, something. Though, if you are truly that un-geek, you might want to enlist someone local. A friend or relative that knows this sort of thing? A professional maybe?

I'd hate for you to wipe out something vital.

Yeah a fifteen year old would be lost without that !lol Anyway my uncle knows alot about computers (works for IBM) ill ask him this weekend.

I mean, it doesn't take a hardcore techie to backup, reformat, and re-install. But it takes a bit more familiarity than you have expressed to do it smoothly.

Also, make sure you have everything you need to reinstall the system. Drivers, Software, Etc.


And I'd be sad if I lost some of my vintage stuff.

There was no mention of an IRQ or Machine Check error, it was just a message about hard drive space?

You should be able to find drivers for everything you need online. Motheboard chipset, video, audio, network, input devices.

Actually, he never posted what error it was throwing. He has opted rather than working out the issue, to reformat and hope it goes away. I understand that he has several other persistent errors.

I've done that occasionally myself. Kind of a 'whatever' situation.
