Well, my dad doesn't want me online past 2 am... so i know theres a way around that but just plugging ethernet directly into modem... only problem is he told me i can do that but i have to configure stuff and he doesn't think i know how, well guess what people, thats where the genius of eGO comes in and helps out. So after i plug it directly into the modem, what will i need to do to get me going for these late night fights?...

Thanks.

Thats pretty resourceful Aooga, but we dont want you to get into trouble on our account. Are you sure you want to risk it?

Well the biggest risk is that without that router you don't have a hardware firewall protecting your computer.

It sounds to me like Dad okayed it as long as he doesn't use the router...but I agree, make sure you get express permission first!

yes i have his permission, he sorta challenged me as dorky as that sounds to see if i can bypass the router and still play tf2 after.... i don't think i'll be doing anything on mozilla... just play games... harmless?...

Question 1: What type of connection is it (DSL, Cable, etc)?
Question 2: Who is your provider?
Question 3: Do you have a static IP for your connection?
Question 4: If you are using DSL, do you know the username and password?

Have you just bitten the bullet and done it yet? I've got a Motorola SurfBoard modem and can plug that directly into my computer. My computer's DHCP kicks right in and does whatever it needs to do, no work on my part.

Now, if he's done something to your computer's settings to where it won't automatically get an IP address, you'll have to take a few more steps, but it's not hard.

Heh... feel like I'm contributing to the delinquency of a minor, here :-)

sorry for double post, but yeah i have motorola surfboard modem

Nothin' to it, but to do it... Just trace your cable from your PC to your router and unplug it. Unplug the router from the modem, and replace with the cable from your PC. Viola!

Give it a few moments to acquire the addresses and open your web browser to see if it works. Make sure to try a safe site like google or msn. If it doesn't work, reboot and try again. If that still doesn't work, it's going to take much more specific work that we likely won't be able to walk you through, as you will not have an internet connection.

Oo Woody oO said it best, the single biggest reason this isn't advised is you will not have the protection of your Router's firewall. That little bugger blocks more than you'll ever know. Also, make 100% sure that your AV software is up to date. Don't want to take any more chances than you have to.

Let us know!

Just as Ninja said, it should work just by plugging it in. The most reliable way to try it out is to turn your computer off, unplug the modem from power, connect the modem directly to your computer, plug the modem back in, and then turn your computer on.

Doing this with cable should be easy. As long as your computer's ethernet card is set to use DHCP (most likely), then just make sure you fully power cycle the modem after plugging it into the PC in order for it to recognize the new MAC address of the host its plugged into and for the computer to renew the IP addy from Comcast.

ALRIGHTY then.... we will see i guess... but if i'm not at the friday fight, ya know why..

edit: my dad says that we aren't using dhcp.... so now what?

yeah... I know it's too late, but now it's on principal :-)

If your computer isn't using DHCP, then it's got an IP address specified. From my experience with this, it still doesn't matter. your modem will have it's own IP address, you can find what it is by going to www.whatismyip.com, but that's really not that important.

so... back to my previous advice.... nothin' to it, but to do it!

if it doesn't work, just hook everything up like it was and reboot, no harm done.
