Does Dual Core equal Double Speed?

His opinion of dual core processors is correct for the casual desktop user, the one who writes up documents and generally just uses the computer for business things and whatnot.
For gamers on the other hand, dual core processors are extremely vital now a days because games such as Crysis and Source games, among many more, make use of both cores.
 
Actually, that's not true at this time. TF2 maxes out one of my cores and doesn't touch the other. I've a pretty strong system and it's being bottlenecked by my processor in Source games. Dual core systems are here, they're quickly becoming the heart of the industry. However, if you are running an application that does not support or poorly supports multiple cores, you might actually be better off with a single core as they're usually clocked higher.

I greatly look forward to Source being optimized for multiple cores.

I remember that they added support for multiple cores, it might have been an experimental switch you had to use when starting up the game because I remember something along those lines.

I could be completely wrong, but thats just what I remember.
 
It's there, it exists, but it requires the server to run it as well.

Word on the grapevine is that sooner or later it'll patch to being on by default.

It's still a little glitchy too, weird things like starting rounds buried to my neck in the ground till I jump. Stuff like that.
 
The support is present, but it's not enabled by default, and before you can use it, it also has to be enabled on the server (which it's not).

When they finalize the support, it will be turned on by default for both the servers and clients.
 
The only modern game I've tried and know uses both cores fully right now is Unreal Tournament 3. I'm guessing any game using the Unreal Engine 3 will take advantage of multicore (need to test this out with Bioshock..).

The Crysis demo I tried did not utilize both cores. Not sure if they've released an update to enable it.

Valve has stated that TF2 and possibly all the Orange Box games have a concurrent multithreaded particle effects system, but that's it. Hopefully the "true" multicore support mentioned above is enabled by default soon.
 
World of Warcraft does as well. Oddly enough. I get an almost perfect load balance across the two cores playing that. About 55/45, but still pretty good. Lord of the Rings Online does too.
 
You can actually assign programs certain cores. When I game, I restrict cores 1 and 2 to normal background, and cores 3and 4 to the game (sometimes only utilizes one though)
 
Scope - it's called "Task Manager" and it comes with windows. :p

Just right-click on a task, select 'Set Affinity'
