Winston Churchill said, "To improve is to change; to be perfect is to change often."

This division has been changing in recent months and it will continue to change. Not because it was wrong or bad before, but because I believe change is the path to improvement.

Since joining eGO, I have tried to help facilitate positive change. Since becoming leadership and then DL, I have been given more opportunities to have direct control over the decision-making processes that lead to change. I consider this a great honor and it is not something I take lightly. I do not make these decisions without careful deliberation and without consulting my fellow leadership team and also listening to what members have to say on certain matters.

This division is experiencing a metamorphosis. Just as the caterpillar turns into a butterfly, we will change appearance, while still being the same. One division, changing shape, growing into something new.

During the transition stage, the caterpillar becomes a pupa. This chrysalis is not really all that attractive. It's closed, boring and on the outside, it may appear like nothing is really going on. However, big changes are taking place inside. Cells are growing rapidly and the pupa is preparing for a beautiful butterfly to emerge.

Our division has been in the pupa stage. We are preparing to emerge as something strong and wonderful.

Change in the insect world is expected and even applauded. For humans, it is not always so easy. This is especially true if those changes are taking place in a community where we feel happy and safe. Change threatens the security that we feel here.

Why is change so difficult for people? Resistance.

Resistance is part of the human condition. Resistance is often rooted in fear. Resistance to change is often because of fear of change. With fear, we see a fight-or-flight response.

Our community is no exception. Some people will fight against the changes, or rebel. Some people will leave, either because they are unwilling to adapt to the change, or because they fear the idea of change. Some leave because it simply doesn't fit them anymore and that is completely their right to choose.

It's always unfortunate when people leave the community. I know I feel a personal sadness each time we lose a member. That said, change is necessary. I will be diligent in creating the types of change that this division needs to grow and succeed as a place that is fun and friendly for all. I know that my fellow leadership seek the same goals.

There will be some who resist. I do not blame them. As I said above, resistance is part of the human condition. However, I have a duty to protect this division and if things get out of hand, we will do what is needed to ensure peace and order is restored and maintained.

The most effective approach to resistance is compassion. There is always some wisdom in the resistance, just as there is wisdom in fear. Fear acts as a self-defense mechanism. Fear when it acts as danger management helps protect us. It keeps us from doing stupid things that will harm us.

Yet sometimes fear causes us to react in ways that are irrational. Fear in numbers only perpetuates this problem. Have you ever seen a group of people spook themselves telling ghost stories by a campfire at night? It's a similar concept.

When people are afraid or confused by change and they huddle together, whispering rumors about this or that, it creates a negative energy. This can affect the way you perceive things, causing one to believe that things are worse than they really are or that there are big problems that don't actually exist.

We will always try to be transparent with you. We will always try to keep you in the loop of what is happening and why, especially when it pertains directly to you. That said, we also need your help. We need members who are willing to participate wholly and fully, in whatever capacities they are able (no matter how small).

We need members who truly want to see this division be a better place, a safe place and a fun place for all. There is no room for drama, no room for back-stabbing, no room for bullying and no room for name-calling.

As our History and Structure page says, "This clan's foundation rests on honor, loyalty, and integrity. There is a heavy emphasis on maturity, fair play, helping others and having a fun and competitive gaming experience that all can enjoy."

As a division, we need to get back to our roots and remember why we are all here and what this community is supposed to be about.

It is my personal mission to lead to the best of my ability with humility, integrity, collaboration, justice, courage, temperance, accountability, humanity, transcendence, and good judgment. I have challenged my fellow leaders to do the same.

I invite you each to help us with the growth of this division.

This is not my community. This is not leadership's community. This is your community. I implore you to be a positive, active member of your community.

There are many ways to do this. The simplest way is to play the game. Play and have fun. Show kindness to your fellow members. Be friendly to players on our servers. Join us in Teamspeak and get to know your fellow members. Participate in the forums. Show compassion and respect while doing so. Acknowledge that we all have different personalities, backgrounds, hobbies and quirks but we all share one thing in common: Team Fortress 2 and this community.

If you have thoughts, ideas or suggestions for improving this community, don't be shy. If you see someone doing something wrong (even if that someone is a leadership member) don't be afraid to point it out. We all make mistakes and leadership is not immune. We must all be held accountable for our actions in order to change in a positive way.

We also need your active participation. If you see someone doing something admirable, tell us about it so we can award them and thank them. If you have an idea that might improve the division or a plan for something fun we can do, tell us about it. We need you!

We also want to hear about how we can improve. Participate in divisional meetings. Admins, come and participate in Admin Round Tables. Use the private forums for Gs, Os and our sub-groups to communicate with your fellow members and facilitate ideas. Everything you need is at your disposal. The tools are here. We need simply to pick them up and use them.

Remember that complaints alone don't fix problems. Solutions fix problems. Action fixes problems.

Constructive criticism is always welcome. You may send this to me directly, to any leadership member or preferably, in the Dropbox. I can't promise you that every suggestion will be implemented but I can promise you that every concern or suggestion will be heard and considered. I can promise you that I will listen and I do care.

It is always your choice to make. You can choose to help create positive change in this community. You can choose to be a part of the good things to come. You can choose to make this community a better place because you are in it. We value you. We appreciate you and we will work harder to show you this on a regular basis.

Thank you all for being part of the TF2 Division.

Remember, the caterpillar does not become a butterfly in one day.

i'm excited to see what's ahead

and also just like a Caterpillar to a butterfly humans do go thou changes in life

we all start out as baby's where our every need is dependent on others to toddlers that learn to walk and talk to young kids that are still developing to pre teens and teens that are starting to have individual personality's and develop life long friendships to young adults that must move out of the house and explore the world on there on and hold a job financial responsibility's get married and start a family of there own to middle age or mid life crisis were you must learn to let go of things you hold dear like normally your kids are grown and going off to college and your parents are getting old and passing away to old age and retirement yourself where you must again rely on people to help you because you physically can't perform them any more to your senior years where you have strokes and heart attacks and altimeter's and start going deaf and blind and like a baby you must depend on someone to take care of you to death to where you return to ground from which you rose

a perfect example of this is Benjamin Buttons where the cycle of life is in reverse from a very old man in a wheelchair to a baby that can't talk and knows nothing

every animal and creature and living thing on earth go thou the cycle of life

food for thought

This is a bit overcomplicated haha

Just because something is changing doesn't mean it's changing for the better. People naturally resist changes that are, in their opinion, bad. And if there is enough of these people resisting that their voice is heard on this magnitude, then maybe it's time to reevaluate the changes.

I just feel like there are some fallacies and overcomplicated statements in this post.

Nice read, though I'm not sure why this was written.

"We need to change, and we need to accept change too." Oookayy...

But anyways, I'm gonna have to agree with Noble here. What's the point of changing if you're not progressing forward? If someone resists change, don't tell them that they're only expressing "the human condition." They probably have some good reasons behind resisting.

ive seen the rise and fall of a few leadership teams, each one doing something different, i look forward to seeing what is coming next for this division

I for one welcome our new fracking toaster overlords.

Well written princess. Things do change with time. It's the strong who make the change but it's the stronger who see the change through to the end for better or worse.

Fun and Noble and other of same thoughts. There is wisdom in resistance; IP said that as well. This is our community. If we vote as a community to accept the changes, IP will be a successful leader of the community. If we vote not to accept the changes, her changes fail. How do we vote? We vote by being involved, staying and helping the community to grow. If you vote 'yes', if even passively, you accept those changes. If you vote 'no' then you rail at changes, and work actively or passively to stop the changes, or you just leave.

That is how it works. If you don't like the changes, then look inside yourself first. If the changes are working and you don't like them, then you change or you find a community that you fit in.

I have had my share of civil disobedience here, in the forums, and in private. I have pointed out the 'clique-ish' nature of TS and some members gossip. And, I don't quite fit in. But, I love this community, and I made a choice to be here despite some of my misgivings in the past.

And that is what it comes down to ultimately - choice. Choose to be here and support it how you can, or choose differently. Life is full of choices.

I think she is merely stating a fact that with change there comes resistance and its normal.

Also, I don't see "We need to change, and we need to accept change too." - In her post. I'm confused.

I agree with most of what was said but like others I don't understand the purpose of this thread. I agree completely with what Noblenote said. I mean, we get this giant block of text and even a thread posted to remind us how to act in our TS server; clearly something happened that just got slid under the rug..? I personally don't really care what happened, all I know is I see less and less of us in servers and on Teamspeak every day and a different leadership team every other week. We don't get informed of any mishaps so they don't happen again, just wish it wouldn't be like that :/

Still, I have high hopes for whatever the future might hold, I don't doubt any of our leadership's abilities.

Progressing forward IS the point, hence the butterfly metaphor. New year, new leadership members, fun things happening in the division. That's why it was written.

Wasn't telling anyone they have to accept change. Was saying that it's okay if it feels uncomfortable or if there is something you are uncertain about. If you feel that way, we should talk about it because we care about what you all think, too. Change will always happen but you should all be a part of making it into what you want it to be.

I always loved that story. :)

The TS thread has been coming for a long time. There have been complaints for months about people not feeling welcome. It wasn't one person or one thing that happened. It was just something on my to-do list to get out there in Jan, along with other things. I think we will have more people in TS if it's a more comfortable environment for all.

"Different leadership team every other week" is definitely an exaggeration but I sense frustration in your text when you say that. This is one of the reasons this post was made. If you have more you want to say about this or want to talk with me or any other leadership privately, let me know. The recent changes were because we needed to add more leadership. We want to have a sufficient team working for you all so each of our programs get the attention they deserve.

"We don't get informed of any mishaps so they don't happen again, just wish it wouldn't be like that " <- I'd like to talk to you more about this part if you're willing. I think it's a valid point. No one here did anything specifically and that wasn't the intent of this post. The intent was to express thoughts that were on my mind and also to address concerns that some members have and to let everyone know that we are in this together and we value our members. However, this statement is coming from somewhere and it has me curious. This falls into the "tell us how we can improve" category. So if you're up for it, let's talk.

"Giant blocks of text" are what I am known for (ask leadership lol). Nothing was "slid under the rug". This comes from my thoughts, leadership meetings and conversations and many, MANY conversations with members over the past couple of months. I try to be concise 99% of the time but sometimes I just think it's good for the members to know how I feel about things. A post is a good way to do that.

(IIRC, my last State of the Division post was quite lengthy, too and no one questioned the purpose of that one.)

On a more serious note.

I've only been here for a few weeks, but I think I can safely say to any doubters out there that Insomnia Princess does want what is best for the TF2 Division. (Admittedly I'm only basing this on a couple small things I've noticed.) I do agree with not feeling particularly welcome on teamspeak, but that's mainly due to my personality (introverted) and the fact I've yet to hear anything about the new member experience.

She is a good DL

Well I can't really say much about what you do. I know leadership is doing what they think is best, and even if they weren't, I wouldn't be one to leave on my own. You're stuck with me for the foreseeable future, so show me this progressive change you're talking about. I look forward to it :)

I'm open to help, too, if I'm able.
