8800GTS SLI VS. 8800Ultra

since i have had to pretty much replace everything else in my computer i think i want to up grade my video. currently i have an 8800GTX but want the 8800Ultra but cant find it locally anywhere and i want something now. So im asking since i have never run sli, would i get sli 8800 GTS 512 or just 1 ultra? Or maybe get another GTX and sli them but i rather have just 1 video card but i want the best as of right now. thoughts?

Personally, I don't think the Ultra is enough of an upgrade to be worth the price. Also, if you look at any benchmarks/real world in game testing, the GT outperforms the GTS, and it is cheaper. (Or it was, many companies have bumped up the price.) I say, if you really want to, go for 8800GT SLI.

But that is just my opinion.

I wouldn't upgrade to an Ultra from a GTX. You can buy an aftermarket cooler and overclock it to Ultra speeds. Heck you could probably overclock to Ultra speeds now depending on your case cooling anyway. To be honest, you have a pertty awesome card right now, so if you're looking to spend that kind of money, look at the 9800 GX2 when they get released. Depending on your resolution you use will be the bottleneck of the graphics card. The 384-bit of the GTX/Ultra helps at resolutions higher than 1600x1200.

I would personally stick with what you have. If you want more performance out of your GTX, just overclock it to a stable speed.

Stick with what you have and try to overclock. Like nemo said, just wait until the 9800 GX2 comes out. That will be one of the true dx10 video cards.

Hey, just wait like a few more weeks. The 9800 GX2 is comming out soon. All it is is pretty much just 2 8800 GTX on one card. It will run you about 680 dollars I believe. It is twice as fast, naturally, and is capable of 4-way SLI. The only better card on the market right now, at least until that card comes out, is ATI's 3870 X2. The 9800 GX2 will perform slightly better, probably scoring only up to about 800 extra points on a benchmark. But yeah, if you are wanting to upgrade a GTX, just wait for that card to come out.

Or you could just wait get the 9800GX2 which is basically two 8800GTS G92 on the same card .

I say wait it out, and what motherboard do you currently have?

garden and I have had Dual 8800gt's for a while =] were trendsetters. i wouldnt put to much weight on the 9800GX2 it isnt going to be what it was due to the low level of comeptition from ATI.

iirc the 9800gx2 will offer a 30% performance increase over the 8800 ultra, which is great for a single card, the cons are that it will cost a fortune and will consume lots of watts(pun intended).
