So, I got to talking with one of my old college roommates the other night, and the subject turned to TF2 and how he needed to install it because it's better than crack. To which he replied that was the reason he's only played Portal and HL2.

Anyway, we did start talking about our TFC exploits back in college and it got me to thinking. eGO consists of an impressive cross section of the gaming community, with many players both older and younger than I.

How many of you guys played Team Fortress or Team Fortress Classic before playing TF2?

Um I'm picking option 7 which isn't listed. I only played TFC, not TF, and I bought HL before TFC was released...but I loved it! I remember being on dial up and having my sniper laser lag behind the cross hairs before they patched it. Then when I went to my buddy's house when he got a cable modem it was pwntime! Back then 50 ping was awesome compared to everyone else's 200+. I also remember how awesome conc jumps were, but I sucked once they patched that as well and made it more difficult.

I was also in a clan called the Knights of Death as |KoD|*Captain*. We eventually made it to the top of mose leagues, but I had since "retired" as school was more important. Then I heard one of the guys hacked during a tournament and they got disbanded...Man that was 8 years ago....

BTW did you all know Half-Life is 10 years old this year?

I'm with Nemo on this one. Never played QWTF, and got HL before TFC was released (and CS). TFC was such a good time, even playing it on dial-up. I remember having to lead my targets even though bullets traveled instantaneously.

I only once met a medic who was better than me in TFC (we had a duel to see who was better), though I never did leagues so I'm sure there were some insane players there.

You poor, wretched soul. A man is not truly saved until he hath played Deus Ex, or Baldur's Gate.

man... these games by valve are instant legends.... half-life opposing force takes me WAY back to when i palyed it for the first time when i was 7

I loved playing half-life multiplayer, who could forget the sound of the crossbow being shot, then you're dead? How could life get better? TFC was released, wow, I don't know how many days of school me and my friend would skip to play against my dad. Then they released mods and it just got better, right up until the cheaters infected every server. TFC was a great game!

I played TFC a lot back in the day (what a game!). I played the original TF but only briefly as my internet connection was pretty bad and most of my friends didn't even own computers yet. It's amazing to think how far TF (and games in general) have come in the last 10 years. I wonder what Team Fortress will be like in 2018...

I believe I got half-life in 1999, which is a little after it came out I believe. TFC was the best game ever. I did league play running flags and was an avid concer ^^. Nothing beats the conc maps, and I still go back and play them every now and then. Boy I miss the old days of stacking 5 or 6 sentry guns on top of each other outside of the enemy base on well :(

played tfc back when i was still a youngin till the day everyones servers were filled with bots.

Well, I'll be honest and say that I had a copy of Half-life back in 1999. A copy. A bunch of us used to play over the LAN in college, but it wasn't until TFC came out that I finally bought the game so I could play online. Actually, I bought 5 copies, one for me and four for friends so we could all play TFC. :)

Well, I'll be the first to say that I am a geriatric and played TF like a madman. I remember when it first came ou t. I really miss the detpack for the demoman and the MIRV grenade that the heavy had. Ahhhhh, the memories . . .

Ooohhh. Don't get me started on what I miss from TFC. Sniper launching* for one, and grenades for another.

*Basically, you stand on a sniper's head towards the front of their body. The sniper would then charge up their shot and shoot your feet, launching you in the air. It was a great way to get an engy to interesting locations that he couldn't get to on his own.

I miss the VIP missions, I loved playing the sniper team and have to assassinate the VIP. The grenades are very missed though... those MIRVs can dish out some damage, not to mention that weird drug grenade the spy threw, I don't even know what the purpose of it was.

What's funny is getting a bunch of guys in a server with TK on and only 1 respawn room and then setting off all your MIRV grenades. Man I used to cry laughing so hard as we'd respawn and then blow up.

The first time I found out about TF was on Gamespot.com when TF2 was first announced. Closest thing I had to any experience with TF like games were CSS pre-ZM maps

I'm also one of the Geriatrics. I remember playing TF first as a Netquake mod then later and much more seriously in QW.
Unfortunately my favorite map never made it to QW but DAMN it was fun. (Anybody ever play Hedge6?)
I also played CustomTF which was a great mod that allowed you to choose your classes or make a custom class and spend a certain number of accumulated points and buy mods for a civillian. (speed/armour/health/weapons/abilities)
I loved playing a sniper with a lightning gun, air fist, judo, and hp regen kit.

It was the height of a sweet combination of DeathMatch, TF and MegaTF.
