The Internet You Remember

We all hear of times of dial up and some (most?) of us remember that glorious sound of dial up, but as popular as this notorious noise is it isn't the only big thing of the internet. This weekend I was talking to my fiancee about the controversy over Facebook's internet.org and she reminded me of the controversy over people not understanding the difference between an internet browser and AOL's software. Then, coming home and forgetting my Origin password I had to get a new one, something that takes around 1 minute or so; while during a time in the past it could take up to 24 hours for certain settings to take hold, including passwords.

Something that really sticks out from my gaming memory especially is going to websites to download map packs for TFC and DoD overnight on my 56k modem because having to try to download them from the server was a major hassle, and sometimes was impossible to do if the rounds were faster.

Something that really sticks out from my gaming memory especially is going to websites to download map packs for TFC and DoD overnight on my 56k modem because having to try to download them from the server was a major hassle, and sometimes was impossible to do if the rounds were faster.

If I buy Call of Duty and try to download it, it will take roughly two nights of sleep downloading.

My dad's job required a second phone line, so my senior year of highschool (2000) once I got my laptop computer (IBM Thinkpad, feeling old yet?) we hooked my computer into the second phone line and called each other to play Command & Conquer: Red Alert.

Side note: I remember connecting via modem to servers pre-AOL, direct connect in the days of Windows 3.1 just to download demos of games. EGA Trek anyone?

I played with computers before the internet (ie: it existed we just didn't use it) and I remember thinking how amazing paint was. *facepalm*

Our schools had Mac computers and we would play Oregon trail, everyone would fight over who got to play at recess, lol.

My first internet experience was dialup with aol and gosh, didn't everyone use aim back then? We had fun playing with our little aim profiles for people to read. *sighs* Ah, to be so simple back then.

I do admit, I miss MSN messenger and MSN communities.

This and Space Invaders were a couple of the first games I ever played, on an Apple ][e
Our family's first computer was a Tandy 386SX.

I remember doing research before Google existed.

I remember playing on the Demon Counterstrike servers in the UK on dialup, where I played with Mani who later made the Mani admin mod (for you oldschool CS fans).

I remember WON ids and how utterly horrible Steam was when it first debuted.

I know a thing my friend and I used to do quite a lot was play star craft online but we would use home phones to communicate since I don't think there were VOIPs like TS and ventrillo back then. Would get yelled at for taking the home line over for long hours.
