Honestly, I hate AIM. I've had so much crap from them. Like it seems every username on erth and beyond has been taken.
I don't like Yahoo either, ny sister installed it brainlessly and got some nice spyware.
I like MSN, nice look, spyware free, can have any name you want. And there are some nice mods, such as removing the ads and MSN Plus.

But if some friend of mine uses AIM or Yahoo and I want to walk to them, I'll use Pidgin.

Pidgin is nice. It's a clean client with some nice features.

Or you could just study the various OSCAR reference pages, and make your own client that way.
But then again, you probably wouldn't be able to legally market any program like that.

Edit: Ah, seems that they're giving off all this Open AIM information for free. I thought they were going to charge people for it.

This is definitely going to be my next project, I've been wanting to make an AIM client since forever.
