New Hardware Wanting to upgrade

Hello!!

I want to upgrade my craptops HDD to an SSD and also upgrade the system RAM from 6GB stock to 8GB.

What are the best options?

With the 500GB SSD, I may go with the 250GB version to save some money.

Are they good? Any recommendations?
 
Vengeance RAM sadly has a pretty high failure rate compared to most other kinds (Its still pretty low, but its relative) and the CAS tends to be somewhat high

Id get some G.skill ram instead, 2x4 sticks.

Was going to mention different kinda of SSDs but wow, the 500 GB 850 EVO is at a REALLY good price, $30 cheaper than a 480 GB M500 SSD, and those are slightly slower

Yeah I was just reading up that Corsairs vengeance RAM has a high crap out rate. I'll look into those and crucial as well. Thanks!
 
Well thankfully I purchased the Corsair Vengeance memory (2x4gb ddr3 1600) & have yet to have any issues. Of course I purchased it during Black Friday of 2013 I think before I even knew about the extreme drop rate, but the good news is that like G.Skill, all memory (as to my knowledge) comes with a lifetime warranty, so I can simply send it back & get a replacement pair if it goes bad. Only reason I didnt go with G.Skill was cause of the price. Good news is now that ddr4 is coming out more, its causing ddr3 memory prices to go down. I may consider going for G.Skill memory in the future, but wont happen anytime soon.

Yeah when i bought my RAM it was before DDR4 was released and it was nearly $90. Now it seems 8GB of DDR3 is hovering around $75 instead of 80-$90

Also, let me correct the ram i suggested above. Here is a laptop version of said ram.

Yes the 500GB Samsung EVO SSD is an amazing SSD. It is my OS and Primary Drive. However, I've got no experience in upgrading laptop RAM

I use the fans to replace the stock ones because case lighting, you don't need them because you get 2 with the H100i, plus 3 included with the case. You can also remove the mouse, keyboard, and monitor if you don't need them

For the second rig, id swap the ram out for some g.skill ram and drop it down to 8 GB. There is absolutely no need for anything more than 8gb unless you do heavy video/image editing.

Id swap out the seagate drive for a Western Digital drive because seagate is known to fail. If you want a relatively fast HDD get a WD black.

Switch out the gigabyte GPU for the Asus Strix. You save 30 and it has better reviews.

Id remove all the extra case fans you put in because leds arent for everyone and also corsairs case fans are great.

I switched out the corsair PSU for an EVGA PSU, the new one being a 650w 80+Gold. With whats there you put a PSU that was overpriced and had an unnecessary amount of wattage.

CPU is fine on the second one, I5s are great and is better at single core than I7s. Multicore threading isnt actually needed.
The case is fine, but if you want a case less flashy, get a Corsair Obsidian case.

I removed the peripherals because its up to the user to decide.

There are quite a few things i disagree with with your rig but thats for another day.
 
I have an 840 evo, cant really justify paying for any of the 850 series.

No context to this statement. Don't justify it because you already own the previous generation SSD or because the 840 evo isn't great, and have low opinions/expectations for the 850 evo/pro series?

For the price, the additional APEC increases aren't worth it is what I mean. I've enjoyed my 840 evo
 
Well Samurai as I would love a tower PC build, but I travel a lot, so a laptop is crucial for me. Unfortunately the craptop I have currently isn't super powerful for gaming. It will play games well enough but it isn't a gaming rig. I figure some better dual channel RAM and an SSD will help with overall performance and load times until (a long time from now) I can get a better laptop.

I was looking at the 850 evos for the sale price but also for the reviews stating how good and fast they are.

I'm still on the fence for RAM though. How good are G.Skills? The vengeance had 9-9-9-24 timings while the g.Skills have 9-9-9-28. What is the difference in the performance aside from the complaints that the vengeance modules have a chance to crap out?

G.Skill is considered the best ram hands down. Vengeance ram is more for looks than anything but considering its in a laptop that doesnt matter.

CAS wise i thought vengeance was higher but its kinda hard to find the info. I do know that for outright good ram get G.Skill
 
Allrightythen. I'll look into the G.Skills. Upon receipt of the SSD (it'll be a bit) I'll reach out again for a step by step for swapping it out. My recovery media from Toshiba is a partition on the HDD, and I need to be able to keep and use it.

Ok, just out of general curiousity, what is your laptops spec and what brand and model. I run stock RAM in my G750JZ, but thats because I don't upgrade laptops since its a royal pain in the ass unless its something simple like SSDs or hard drives. My advice, unless your laptop is easy to mod, save up for either a G751JY or a MSI GT72

Like I said..........craptop. I already looked into the Dominator and am considering it as the upgrade. However, approximately $300 is easier than $2100 to scrape up. It will be a while before I can get a new laptop with good specs.
