hard drive disconnects?

So... this is an odd one. My internal hard drive keeps randomly disconnecting. Going to computer management and rescanning disks tends to bring it back online.

I have a 520 power supply, so that shouldn't be the issue. It tends to happen during high load, like virus scans, defrags, or trying to copy large amounts of data.

The data is all physically fine, but I just can't figure out why it would act this way. The drive isn't failing... I've tested it thoroughly.

Maybe your power supply isn't functioning to spec.

might also be a cable issue try a different cable connecting drive to motherboard

What is the power efficiency for your PSU. Also what is the specs of your PC because you might be using more power than you realize

Assuming your hard drive is using a SATA connection, try a different SATA cable because the cable may be damaged and voltage might be fragmenting inside the wire.

Also try attaching the SATA connector to a different SATA port on the motherboard.

If that doesn't work, use a different SATA power connector on your power supply to see if it could be the power connector on the power supply. (Assuming there is more than one SATA connector, which there should be)


Since you said it happens under high-load, it's possible your computer is running out of RAM and doesn't have enough virtual memory to swap-file. However this is pretty unlikely, because the symptoms of this usually result in your computer locking-up or processes running extremely slow, not the drive disconnecting. However I have seen weird differentiating symptoms related to this so it's something to consider.
