Anyone have any experience with it?

Just got the offer to register for a free upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 10.

I have a question about this. Will all of my files and other stuff be transfered to Windows 10, or will I have to redownload everything?

From what I've seen it's basically what Win 8 should have been. Basically Win 7 with some new Apps that can be run in non-fullscreen. It actually looks like something my 60-year old parents could use and not be totally lost with.

@Joey, in theory when you do an in-place upgrade of Windows your files are not supposed to be touched, but I would back everything up before trying it.

If I have to pay for service packs, I'm stay away from win10 like the plague.

I like to wait a few weeks, but will most likely get it. The only OS I didnt jump on board was win 8 until 8.1 came out. You can only hold on to a OS for so long I like to do a fresh install every 6 months or so anyways.

Whey they say "pay for service packs" think point upgrades like OSX does. I don't think MS is going to do service packs the way they've done them for past OSs anymore (unfortunately IMO).

I believe Windows 10 is not released until July 29. But, until then, you can make "reservations" through the windows icon in the bottom right hand of your task bar. It will ask for and send you an email, notifying you when the update is ready to be installed.

One way or another, people will be forced to Win10 as support for Win7 and 8 expires. Yes, there are a lot of XP users still out there, but their PCs are steadily being converted to an updated OS as viruses, trojans, etc., take advantage of the lack of further support for it from MS. I plan on moving to Win10, just a question of how soon.

I have been running windows 10 since the technical preview came out and absolutely love it and have not reverted back to Windows 8.1 since installing it, Unlike previous Windows Betas, i have been able to play all of my games including BF4 that uses punkbuster which in the past wouldn't allow you to play with previous Windows beta versions

As Windows 10 will be the "Last version of windows and will be somewhat using the OSX upgrade model which means all future upgrade to the OS will be performed via windows update.

Microsoft Explains Why Windows 10 Will Be the Last Version of the OS

Microsoft has also has stated there will be no more additional costs tied to windows 10, even if you use the free upgrade. Some people are still confused about the "Windows 10 will be free for Windows 7 and 8 users for the first year" thinking that they will have to pay for it after the first year, This is not the case. It means that on July 30th 2016
you will have to pay to upgrade your Win 7 or 8 pc

.
Microsoft: Windows 10 will not be sold as a subscription

There has be nothing from MS stating that "Service packs" will have an additional cost since MS has done away with the Service pack with Windows 7

So who is going to be guinea pig here?

I already plan to upgrade and go for it as my main os. I know the first few weeks after release is always issue filled and don't mind having to fix / reformat if something goes seriously wrong:P

edit

Cross 8.1 is pretty much a service pack or optional upgrade.

I'm hoping that this is the case. I plan on day one upgrade so I'll post after the install is done for anyone who has concerns.
