I've seen two anime short series which were in my opinion more than great, but I've never properly sat down and watched an entire lengthy series or movie.

I'd like to reach out to you guys and ask for your opinions on what the best anime/s would be to watch for someone who hasn't experienced much of it.

I have no genre preferences so suggest absolutely anything that you think is good, if I like the sound of it then I'll most likely watch it as soon as possible.

Thanks in advance :)

I'd suggest starting with Cowboy Bebop. Very consistent show with strong characters. After that, go with Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood or, if you can tolerate a fair amount of violence, Elfen Lied.

If you like fast paced and over the top, I'd recommend the works of Hiroyuki Imaishi. He did Dead Leaves, Gurren Lagann, and Kill la Kill. They're all pretty fun and some of them are on netflix

I would have to say Shin Sekai Yori is by far the single best anime I have ever seen. However, it's probably a bit out of reach at this time for you to really appreciate it. As you watch more and more, you'll come to realize that shows you really enjoyed when you first started are decent and good at best. Although, it all is just opinion anyway...

Anywho as a proud representative of the anime division, I give you some genres with some anime that should be "newcomer" friendly. Keep in mind, some genres may overlap....

Action: Fate/Stay Night: Unlimited Blade Works, Psycho-Pass, Samurai Champloo, Code Geass, Sousei no Aquraion, Cowboy Beebop, Black Lagoon

Fantasy: Kyoukai no Kanata, Ookami to Koushinryou,

Romance: Toradora, Kanon (2006), Tonari no Kabitsu-kun, Isshuukan Friends.

Slice of Life: Gochuumon wa Usagi Desu ka?, Minami-ke, Amagi Brilliant Park

Mystery: UN-GO, Gosick, Kamisama no Memo-chou, Hyouka

Psychological: Shin Sekai Yori, Higurashi no Naku Koro ni, Mawaru Penguindrum
