What makes Team Fortress 2 so good?

As others have already said its how TF2 doesn't try to be the same as everything else.

The graphic scheme make the game laugh out loud funny. The design of the characters is clever as they are so different from each other, you have no doubts who you've just run into. A lot of fps games, you can't tell what the other player is carrying. In TF2 you know exactly what your enemy has so you can adopt a specific strategy to counter. Or run away.

Having relativly few weapons for each class also helps. The game keeps great balance in terms of strengths and weaknesses. Each character has a job to do and making sure there are a range of classes in your team improves the experience.

The fact that its not trying to be uber realistic also helps. It looks fun, so you're more likely to have a lighter attitude whilst playing. I think the TF2 community stands out against others because we can laugh when we die. We're not trying to be a 'real soldier' when we play. Unlike Counterstrike for example which is trying to provide a realistic experience.

TF2 sells on its quirks, balance and in our case.. A great community.

Its one of the few games where I honestly dont give a darn what my score looks like, just as long as my team is winning, and I'm doing something to help. If that means a well-placed dispenser as an engineer, or shutting down a couple doorways as demoman, or sitting back and healing as a medic when the entire opposing team is pyros on 2fort, I'm game with it. Thats why I like it. If I'm on, and have teh uber dominator skillz, well, I can do that. But when I see in the first few minutes that I'm just not all there mentally, I can find something else useful to do, like being the team spy checker on D.

No other game I've played allows you to do that. In dod, if you're off, you're screwed. I'd usually manage a 2:1 anyway, but its not fun.
