the rear panel should work when there's nothing plugged into the audio header on the mobo, sorry...
My point for that is, I just remembered that I'm using an old SB Live 24-bit card, and I always have my mic plugged into the blue slot instead of the pink one, and was hoping at least that would work for you in the meantime. Back to the forums!

wait....if you say that it should work w/ nothing plugged in than why wont the mic work than right away?

that's why I kept hammering the microphone muted/volume part
Since you said the mic works on another machine, and you've checked all the settings already(mic not muted, mic volume turned up), by process of elimination, it's left up to the mobo.
One more thing to reverify... you said you're using the Realtek control panel, right? At any time, did you ever double-click the little speaker icon next to your clock and bring up that mixer?

meh... well, looks like our boats are similar then. I can't use my onboard audio either, no power goes to it :-(

my onboard doesn't work for whatever reason. I've got an add-on sound card that I've used for a while that does work. It's got it's quirks, but I can deal with them.
