Need help choosing a modem and possibly a new router. I asked Zero awhile back but forgot what he recommended.

I'm currently renting the Arris DG860 wireless and have it connected to my PC via ethernet cord but it seems to have lag spikes often. Here's the list I can choose from for modems. Also, any router suggestions? Ive got an apple airport router that is about 2 years old. Not sure if they're are better ones out there worth upgrading to.

Not exactly related to your predicament, but how many devices (computers, phones, tablets, etc) do you have that use the same network?

1 computer, 1 phone, 1 xbox and maybe a tablet in the future if I can get it fixed. Think I'll be switching over to an amazon fire for netflix and what not when my xbox subscription runs out

I've heard good things about the sb6141. The good thing with that mode is it supports up to 340 Mbps and more importantly is docsis 3.0. The cheaper ones are usually docsis 2.0 and won't supported the bonded channels and faster speeds.

Before buying a modem, did you try replacing the cat5 cable? More often than not, a bad cable will cause some of the issues you're talking about.

Thanks for the info! I'll look into the sb6141.

And the cat5 cable is brand new. But that's definitely something useful to know in the future.

It may not apply to you, but be sure you pick a modem that your ISP supports.
