Life-Changing Music

So, I'm a big music nut, and I love experiencing new sounds, even if they're not necessarily "my style" of music, there's always something there to appreciate.

As such, I've been lucky, a few times, to have some life-changing experiences through music. As synchronicity would have it, the topic of The Flaming Lips has come up a couple of times in my mind in response to forum posts today, and it got me thinking about what an amazing band they are, and how Wayne Coyne (the lead singer) has inspired me to pursue what makes me happy, no matter how weird, because that's what life should be about.

So, I'd like to know, what music has changed your life, opened your eyes, or been the "soundtrack for your life"? If you can find it, post a video, link to an online radio, or some other means of sharing the song.

I'll start. It's (obviously) The Flaming Lips' song from their seminal album The Soft Bulletin, called "Waitin' for A Superman."

This song was reportedly inspired by Wayne Coyne walking around a lake with his brother one day while their father was dying of cancer, and how heavy the whole experience was.
 
Love the Lips. All sorts of High School memories there.

I love Weezer. They have actually had quite an impact on my life. Everyone that knows me knows not to mess with my Weezer love. My life changing song: The Good Life

It reminds me to take ownership and responsibilty for my life and where it's and where it is heading. If I don't like something, I can change it. It actually empowers me a bit.

I think Rivers is such an emotional writer. He really puts his heart into his lyrics. I don't consider them as emo as their reputation. Most all of their songs really speak to me. But, when I go to the concerts now, I feel older than the next person by at least 10 years. That's super fun! :)
 
One of my favorite songs that really inspires me was from the band Third Day. It is called Thief and is based off a true story...see if you can place it:

(Sorry for the quality, but its the best I could find.) This song touched my heart and just made things more clear.

The entire Trance/Techno genre has done a lot for me. I know it sounds silly, but the "Music of the Future" is what got me interested in the past.

It's a long story, but I chose my major in university because trance got me interested. (History, obviously, but some may not undoistand)

Paul Van Dyk and Ferry Corsten were large parts of it. But there are several more on that list. Too many to name.

Very cool. I checked them out briefly on Youtube just now, and there's some good-sounding stuff there. (Who says internet piracy doesn't drive sales?)

In a weird way, it reminded me of [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1dmh1cZQuXk]this song[/ame] from the Afro Celts (formerly called the Afro Celt Sound System).
 
Yeah I am a trance/techno nut myself. I love listening to the ever so unique beats of DJ Tiësto. He is my favorite trance DJ. But my favorite group has got to be Infected Mushroom. They are one of the few groups that I can honestly say sound completely different from every other trance artist or group. They experiment with surround sound like none other. When I go off to college I am going to try and study sound engineering and physics. Trance music has embedded a fascination with sound in me. I have already started making my own music and experimenting with sound making programs and mixers (I use Fruity Loops).
 
Trance is dead. Ferry Corsten killed it.

I don't really know if this should go here, but do you notice a difference in your attitude with different types of music? It's not life changing necessarily, but attitude changing in a very subconscious, profound kind of way.

Awesome example: I took many years of figure drawing classes in college. Mostly nudes, but that's beside the point! ;) I found that when the instructor played beethoven, I did my most classical type of drawings, very flowing and free, reminisciant of great classical artists of the past. When she played harder stuff, totally different. My most funky, weird drawings were produced while listening to Ozzy Osbourne. Crazy Train actually turned out my favorite drawing. My worst drawings were to Celine Dion, they were just a mess. Go figure. :)

Some of my faves for when I want to design something now: Really cutting edge or crazy=Metallica or Linkin Park. Simple and Clean=the Murmurs or Landon Pigg. Funky and fun=The Pixies or Posum Dixon. Dark and scary=Nine Inch Nails. Maybe I should try some techno and see what turns out.

Just a thought, didn't know if anyone else has experienced similar things. I love how music can change your whole mood and feeling. :)
 
My name. Master of puppets by metallica not only got me into metal, but music in general. I started playing bass like cliff and singing like het. Has been my favorite song for 11 years now.
 
Pink Floyds Dark Side of the Moon got me into music in like 7th grade and ya. i guess i also grew up listening to the cure, pearl jam, and red hot chili peppers so ya. those are my life changing bands. and led zeppelin too
 
Just a few of my favorites from modest mouse- Bankrupt on selling, Cowboy dan, trailer trash, Broke, 3rd planet, from point a to point b, head south, and finally talking s**t about a pretty sunset.
 
Music that changes your life is most of the time something you did not knew you'd like to hear in the first place .

Frank Zappa done it for me. The guy has produced a bundle of albums, i will not get into details but you check him out.

Well, if you think about it, a life-changing experience is just a short-term experience that never stops. There is some music that simply cheers me up, but it's life-changing in a small way because it is there for me when I need it.

I would be remiss if I didn't mention Jethro Tull here. Listening to the magic of Ian Anderson and his rotating band of musical talent has gotten me through some hard times in my life.

This song, in particular, really helped me (in a very strange way) when a close friend of mine died of leukemia. Sure, it was gut-wrenching, but this also reminds me of all the good times he and I had together before he passed away.
 
I seem to enjoy christian music in my realm of hardcore and metal...
It makes it so much better when you can get a +10 power boost on the music that already hypes you up.
Least for me metal and hardcore seem to be what I love right now.
