I'm starting this thread for those who are "overclocking devils" share some of your wisdom with us. I know my system can handle overclocking with breeze, but I don't know where to start.

For a start the specs of my system are:

-ASUS MAXIMUS FORMULA SPECIAL EDITION LGA 775 Intel X38 ATX Intel Motherboard

-Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 Kentsfield 2.4GHz 2 x 4MB L2 Cache LGA 775 Quad-Core Processor

-MSI RX2600XT Diamond Radeon HD 2600XT 256MB 128-bit GDDR4 PCI Express x16

-Kingston HyperX 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel

-Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 ST3250310AS 250GB 7200 RPM 8MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive

-LG Black 20X DVD Burner with LightScribe

Please, enlighten us!

Look at your cpu VID. that is a value you need to put it your motherboard, we do not want flexuating voltages, makes sure you lokc PCI-E frequency to 100, and PCi Frequency to 33 I believe.

Make sure you have actual ram timings and not have the stuff set to auto. Make sure all your fans are spining at 100 percent.

ALSO make sure you have a 1:1 ration of FSB:DRAM clicked.

then start increasing your FSB by 5~10 depending on the multiplier of the CPU (I think the Q6600 in 8~9) and then boot into windows, if everything is running fine, increase again. do this until you can no longer boot into windows, and then run ORthos test for at least 12 hours.

BTW what heatsink are you using?

I have an Intel E6750, Gigabyte P35-DS3L, 2GB G.Skill DDR2 800 RAM and I got my CPU from 2.66GHz to 3.5GHz on air with a nice aftermarket HSF, minor voltage increases, and FSB:DRAM = 1:1 (Did not change memory timings or anything like that). Temps idle at 30C, get to around 40-50 in my Antec P182 case.

It depends on what you've got. Mine was very easy, and did it all right in the BIOS in under 5 minutes.

Keep in mind though, it is very hard to "fry" current technology, as most always have an overheat sensor and shutdown if things don't work out. The only thing you really want to NOT do, is crank up voltages a lot. That is probably the biggest thing that CAN damage your system.

Haloracer is right. I heard from that modern processers can be heated up to near 80 degrees C without any damage. But of course they shutdown before that to avoid a mishap.

Stock heatsink/fan... But I'm all eyes...

Most lilkly if you want to overclock you are going to want to get something big heavy and fat. I suggest the Thermalright Ultra 120 Extreme w/ 120MM fan and MX-2 for thermal paste.

Also what is your power supply?

I'm really happy with my Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro HSF. Although since I'm running an E8400, I can't get accurate temp readings, need to see if there's a BIOS update to address that yet.

Just got me a Phenom 9600 Black Edition despite the whole L3 bug. I've had interesting results overclocking, passing 2.8 easily on air. I'm hopefully going to be running on liquid cooling again soon so I can push it further. IMO a 3ghz quad-core for ~$220 would be pretty nice.

Heres a list of what I'm running currently, I don't leave it OCed right now, I'll wait to put my water cooling back together.

Its not a bad cooler for the core 2 duo's (I got one on my C2D) but for the quads we want something a lil' bigger :P BTW What mobo do you have?
