Ok, since last night, starting right after the announcement about servers being updated, I have been getting terrible loss and choke showing up in Netgraph 3. Now, I have tested this out, it's happening on ALL eGO servers but not on very many Pubs that I have joined. I joined several different Pub servers last night and tonight testing this issue out and it only happened on one Pub, the rest played smooth as usual. I've tried lowering my cl_cmdrate and cl_updaterate too see if it would fix it but no luck. I have a bit more troubleshooting to try but I was hoping to get some input from others. Anyone have any ideas?

Alright, I removed the router and connected directly to my modem and still had the same problem. Going to install Steam and TF2 on another computer and try that next.

Please post a screenshot with net_graph 4.

Also, type rate in console and let me know the result.

Will do when I get home from work. That'll be around 7:30PM CST (ten hours away :( ). Until then, just so I know, what should my Rate be set at? All my settings should be at default right now.

Your not supposed to be working, your supposed to be tending to your PC :P. I would also check your rate, my neighbor somehow set it for 2500... After adding an extra 0 to the end, he was back to normal. Have a great day at your 10 hour work day :).

Well the rate usually sets itself based on your settings in steam for internet, lag issues are usually a problem with cl_updaterate and cl_cmdrate. These represent how often your client is trying to receive updates from the server and how often it is trying to send updates. If the actual rate received from the server is significantly lower than your client is set for, it generates choke. If the client is set up to send significantly more updates than the server can accept, it generates loss. The rate itself is a global setting for just how much traffic your connection to the server can handle. The server caps the maximum, so you can't actually set it too high, but if you set it too low you can generate choke.

Ahh, I see. I'll check on that when I get home and post my findings here. Thanks for the explanation.

Actually it's a 12-hour work day, I had already been at work for two hours when I saw the post :)

And it's always great, believe it or not I repair/build/upgrade computers for a living at a locally owned Mom-And-Pop computer shop. Been doing it for three years now and was trained by the owner who has been running the shop for twenty years. I don't think I could have a better job :)

Alrighty. I went in to get a screenie for ya and to check my Rate setting. It was set at 3500 which seemed a bit low so I turned it up a bit and things got better. I turned it up some more and they got even better. I finally set it to 100000 and things went back to normal so I think I figured out my problem. Strange thing is, I've never adjusted it before so either it's always been at 3500 or the latest Steam update turned it down.

eGO servers will cap your rate at 25000 by the way... Unless we upgrade to 100 tick, 25000 is the max. Low rates like that are sometimes intentionally used by people to have the effect of "studder stepping" or "telewalking" where it appears that they are skipping across the screen and they become very hard to hit. That is what choke is. If you have a good computer and a good connection, it is beneficial to just max all of your rates out:

cl_updaterate 99 (this will cap at 60 on eGO servers)
cl_cmdrate 99 (this will cap at 67, assuming you get constant 67 fps or higher)
rate 50000 (this will cap at 25000 on eGO servers)

That's only good advice if the server is actually serving out the rate it is capped to.

Which, in my experience ours do not.

I get an update rate of about 30 and a command rate of about 45. Putting either of my rates higher results in choke or loss accordingly. The best thing to do is have your game start at the max rate, and once you are in server adjust your rates to coincide with what the server is giving you.
