Newegg has a Samsung 24" 2md monitor on sale for $110 ($120 before disc code, which is given). However the reviews dont look favorable.

My question is, what exactly do I need to look into specifically when it comes to upgrading my monitor? I really dont want a 24" monitor. I currently have a 22" monitor which is nice, but its like 7 years old & am ready to update it.

Any & all suggestions/ideas are welcome.
 
Refresh rate, response time, resolution and size. You can ignore the first two if you are not into competitive gaming that much. One thing I noticed that is you are using a TN panel monitor. If you want better color reproduction I would suggest getting IPS, the only downside to IPS response time as they not as fast tn panels.
 
Well what do you want in a monitor? Well. We gotta know a few things first:

What are you PC specs? Running an AMD Radeon hd 5500 would not be ideal for a 4k monitor. Running quad titan Xs w/ a 1080p 22in monitor would be a serious waste of hardware.

What are you going to do with the monitor? Doing photo design? Then you need a high resolution IPS monitor for sure. Gaming all day? Then a TN panel might suffice.

How many monitors do you want? Want just one or do you want 6? IPS is what you want for 2+ monitor set ups, not TN. (Do to viewing angles being better w/ IPS displays.)

If you dont want 24inch then do you want 27inch and above? (For 27in go w/1440p, not 1080p because 1080p looks too stretched at 27in tbh) Or do you want an under 24inch?

What type of monitor screen type do you want, IPS or TN? Personally I like IPS over TN, even for gaming. Dem colours!

What response time do you want? Anything under 5ms is pretty decent.

What refresh rate do you want? 60hz? 144hz?

What resolution do you want? 1080p? 1440p? 4k? 720p *gasp*?!

What is your price range? I can recommend you a beast 27inch 1440p 144hz IPS screen (if thats what you want) but you'll need drop about a grand on it lol! Or I could recommend you an 18inch monitor for like 60 usd.


As a side note: It took me a LONG time to finally find a monitor I liked that was decent. You might have better luck finding one faster if you arent someone who is as picky as I am XD! :P

The Samsung is a TN panel where as the AOC is IPS.
Since they are both 5ms @1080p @60hz 21.5in monitors, I would say the IPS over the TN panel. IPS has FAR better colour than any TN panel.

I'd say go with the AOC of the two

21.5in 1080p monitor.

Asus and Acer monitors are more reliable and have (in my opinion) better colour reproduction.
 
Ok so heres my question: ive been getting back into Batman Arkham City as of lately (never really finished the 1st go at it). With these newer monitors will I notice any big differences or will it just process the graphics faster??

Simply put, yes. Higher response time will make it faster. A new monitor would improve the colour quality over your old monitor any day of the week as well.
You are going from a lower resolution to a higher one, that will greatly improve how everything looks and acts in general.

The biggest difference will be the resolution. 1920x1080p is worlds better than 1680x1050.
 
Look at monitors with a 2ms or faster response time with a 144hz refresh rate. That is todays standard for really any first person shooter.

Since we talking about ms here, I highly doubt you will notice a differance. But you will notice is the colour of the games if you go with IPS monitour.

100% no.

144hz monitor is only useful if you get more then 60 fps in a game, if you can't get more then 60 fps in a game, then a 144hz monitor is useless. Seeing as he's playing tf2, batman, I'd say it's safe to say to avoid anything with a 2ms response time and 144hz.

I was stating what the standard was that most gaming is done on these days. Seeing how he is looking at monitors around the $100 range, he cant really touch a 144hz monitor without doubling his budget first.

That monitor looks like crap. Don't get it...

Seriously; it looks pretty good to me. $130 for a 24" monitor with 2ms, 3 year warranty, VESA compatible. The only thing I don't like is the base doesn't allow you for height, tilt, swivel (I'm spoiled with a 24" LG monitor my friend got me that has all of that, and it cost me only $100 LG Flatron E2411). But if you get a monitor stand, then you got the VESA mount and you can adjust the monitor at will.
 
I have one of those as a backup. They can only support up to 75hz display so dont expect to be wowed when you first get it. I actually like the monitor and for the buy its probably the best you can get. I paid only $75 at best buy in store with a coupon on a big local sale day. So I could not pass that up.
 
Personally my favorite monitor is the Asus VQ-248E 24" 1ms 144hz monitor. I have two set up and they both works smoothly off my GTX 980.
