Bad Company 2 Dart hack?

I was using the dart on tanks today, in the open and at mid range. Their effect would disappear before I could switch weapons and aim, no lock box visible, like it had never been tagged. If I shot, weapon failed to track. I was hoping to see if it was always happening to the same tank/driver but only got to see one destroyed and a name indicated so I don't know if it was the same person each time or not.

A glitch? A hack?

Is it possible that they just pop smoke the second they hear the lock-warning? I don't believe you have to actually take the shot for them to know they're tagged. Probably neither a glitch nor a hack.

I get the text indication of a tag and can see the "box" on the target but it just disappears, I'm talking about one, two seconds at most. No "lock" and my missile doesn't track if I do fire it. Tank is in sight the entire time. Today is the first time I've seen this happen.

I don't use the dart much, but I'd think that it could happen if:

1. You dart the enemy and get an indication
2. You hold steady until you get a range indicating you have a lock
3. Target realized it's been locked on and pops smoke
4. You lose lock

This is completely normal as you may know, so maybe there's something I'm misunderstanding.

There is no smoke. I see smoke when it gets popped.

I have to believe it's not a hack as no one is indicating that.

I die a lot using the dart but I like it, time spent in the open is death. I think it does a great job of taking a tank, that's a good distance away, off line for the time it takes the tag to disappear, heheh.
