So it all began with a Kickstarter campaign started by a small startup company, Oculus VR, back in 2012. Since then, consumer virtual reality has undergone a rapid phase of development and has seen its largest push since the early-mid 1990s.
The consumer version of the Rift headset from Oculus VR is launching in Q1 2016, after undergoing development through two development kits and two major prototypes ("Crystal Cove" and "Crescent Bay"). The Rift will later be supplemented by its accompanying [Oculus] "Touch" motion input controllers. So far, we have no pricing on the Rift or the accompanying Touch controllers.

[Most likely] following the Rift's release in Q1, due to continuous delays (though it may still release prior to the Rift), is the Vive headset from HTC in collaboration with Valve; the Vive is the flagship of Valve's SteamVR initiative (which is confirmed to be operable with two more headsets-in-development). It's specifications, based on its Developer Edition, are in-line with the Rift for comparisons-sake. The Vive will be bundled with the Valve-developed SteamVR motion controllers; the headset and controllers have yet to be priced or given an exact release date.

And the third, and most successful (most likely) out of the "Big Three" flagship VR headsets, is PlayStation VR from Sony Computer Entertainment. PSVR works with the PlayStation 4 to provide an incredibly strong VR experience, based on impressions over the past year, on the home console system. So far we know the most about PSVR, including that it so far has at least 51 in-development game titles for the system.

So far the Oculus platform has proven itself the most mature: with the Oculus Store fully operable on Samsung's Gear VR, the first consumer VR device to launch in over a decade; they've announced Oculus Concept (the Oculus Store's version of Steam's Early Access); and have close partnerships with Intel, AMD and Nvidia to have computer manufacturers / retailers sell pre-built, starting-at-$1,000 (USD) "Oculus Ready" PCs for those who do not wish to build their own.
Consumer virtual reality only several months away, after years of waiting; is anyone else here excited for this growing technology?
If you are, which headset do you plan to pick up? Do you plan to build or buy a PC for the Rift / Vive?
