Just wanted to throw this out there:

77,000 Steam users are hacked every month. Here?s how Valve is fixing it
by LAUREN HOCKENSON

One of the crucial parts of Steam ? the computer gaming platform developed by Valve Software ? is the economy of trading items. Steam allows for trading of items and collectibles that are often tied to real-money gains, which could potentially net users a tidy sum of cash for their hard work and dedication to playing a single game on Steam or participating in one of its annual events.

But in a blog post yesterday, the company says that trading has become a massive security problem. The rarity of items, combined with the lucrative aspects of the trading economy, means that hackers have been systematically targeting Steam users to pillage their items storage. It has caused a massive influx of Steam Account hacking issues, to the tune of 77,000 accounts monthly.

The company says ?practically any active Steam account? is worth a hacker?s time:

The ?I got hacked? story is told so frequently it?s become commonplace. And that makes it easy to forget its significance; compromised security of email accounts and PCs, Steam account violation, and theft. We used to hold the opinion that if you were smart about account security, you?d be protected?it?s easy to assume that users whose accounts were stolen were new or technically na?ve users who must be sharing their passwords or clicking on suspicious links. That?s simply not the case.

I've had the same account for 8 years now and bought most of my games on a credit card without issue, and take good steps to protect my account

Same as isimon im going almost 9yrs with my steam account. Dont share passwords, dont troll with your main account. Activate every precaution steam lets you have.

From my bank "Your account information may have been breached being used at a certain location...we are sending you a new card in the mail"

Gotta love your banks sometime.

I bet it has more to do with your actions than simply possessing a steam account. Someone isn't going to hack you five times randomly. You must be clicking links. The most popular one is clicking a link a "friend" sends you as a message, which takes you to an identical looking steampowered page, which tells you to log in. Even when your account is stolen, they cannot get your credit card info. It is wiped, just as it is on amazon, when your details, such as your password, change. Even if it didn't, it still would not give them free access, it would just allow them to make purchases on steam. Amazon requires you to re-enter the card number just for changing your address. Unless something has changed, all payment info should be encrypted and even when steam itself was hacked a few years ago, the hackers would have needed the key to break the encryption to go along with the info that was stolen.I would look elsewhere if you had payment info compromised that many times, such as a local waitress or cashier copying down the numbers.
