This New Year was fairly dull for me. I was feeling sick all day and went to bed early. My friends who always bought the fireworks moved away.
But while those friends were here, boy, did we have some fun.
In the five years I have lived on this street, every New Years (and that one time the Saints won the Superbowl), three of my friends and I and our families had the biggest celebration within earshot. One year the four of us hooked up 3 cans of Axe to a trigger and mounted it on a stick, like a flamethrower. We taped a punk to the end and proceeded to use this device to light half our stuff. One of them blew up on us, but by some miracle no one was hurt. That was the only year the cops showed up.
The next year we made a game of who could tape the most roman candles together and light them all at once. Once again, the flamethrower proved useful. One guy made a massive attack-heli-style missle pod of roman candles. I created this monstrosity of candles with several supporting legs that pointed in several directions. It fell over. Thankfully, the tree fire never really got going.
Every year we had 150 ft of the street in front of our houses absolutely covered in all the fireworks they could buy. The centerpiece was one of those rolls of 10000 firecrackers that we unwound and rolled out like a giant red snake on the street. It was complimented by at least 20 boxes of the big kind of fireworks, the ones that go boom really loud really high. At midnight, 6-7 people with lighters and punks would light every single fuse, including the firecracker roll in several different places. We planned beforehand who would light what so we could do what we needed to do and get the hell out of there so we didn't sustain hearing loss. It lasted about 7-8 minutes, and the street was covered in red firecracker paper for at least a month.
At least one of us had issues.
